    Default Winchester 55gr. fmj bullets

Anyone have a good load for Winchester 55gr fmj bullets in 223 caliber? What powder is best?

If you have the cannelured version, like the Hornadys (55gr BT FMJ w/c) I use, .....

Accurate Arms#2230, 26.0 grains with a modest crimp in the groove seems to give consistent pressure and velocity in both my AR and Mini-14. Accuracy is reasonable for those rifles, too.

Your mileage will probably vary - starting load should be about 24.0, and work upward until you get the accuracy , and all the standard precautions apply, and the standard disclaimers are a MUST.

I run 24.6gr of Hodgdon H335 under 55gr FMJ bullets. I like the Winchester bullets for plinking ammo, but if I'm looking for decent accuracy the Winchesters kind of suck and I go with the Hornady variety.

I have loaded 20 grns of 4198 behind a 55grn bullet. I used to buy my 55grn FMJ BT's from Thunder Mountain Bullets. I don't even know if they are still in business.

    Hope this helps.

I use 18.5gr of IMR 4198 for no real reason other than it goes bang and its the largest charge I can get with my LEE auto disc at one time.
