While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.

Please read the manual before anyone gets hurt.

As was already pointed out, that is the forward assist. It's function is to close the bolt if it doesn't slam home when the bolt release is operated.

Brother...read your manual thoroughly. The manual will locate and describe the rifle components. The manual will describe how to load the rifle (and magazine), use the safety, fire the rifle and render it safe.
The manual will describe how to take your rifle down for cleaning. Do NOT go beyond field stripping for cleaning.
If you have questions about items in the manual, post them, but not until you've gone through it thoroughly.

If you did not get a manual with your rifle, contact the manufacturer and they will send you one. You may be able to download it from the manufacturer's website.

The manual doesnt talk about that piece at all. it is a smith and wesson mp 15.

As a starter, go to this link. Most AR-15's are quite similar. The links from the website I linked to help aid you in familarizing yourself with your rifle.
I've used this Bushmaster manual too. It's better then my Rock River Manual...and as I wrote, AR-15's are pretty similar. You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader for the Bushmaster manual.

Remember, you do not own an assault rifle. You own a semi-automatic sporting rifle with pistol grip and detachable magazine.

Again, good luck...but you'll do fine!

Then you haven't read the manual very well or perhaps you should say, "I didn't see anything about that in the manual."

    From the S&W manual

    and

    • If the bolt does not completely close, press the bolt assist.
This should move the bolt completely forward. If your rifle is
not equipped with a bolt assist or the bolt assist does not
chamber a round, see the Clearing Misfires section of this
    manual.

As others have said, it is the forward assist. It is used to help close the bolt during a malfunction that prevents the bolt from going fully into battery.

On a side note: When I first read the OP I was thinking "well as far as I know S&W hasn't made a LH model" so if while holding the rifle, your forward assist is on the left then it sure as hell is going to leave a mark when you pull the trigger!

Also as others have said, please --at the very least-- read your manual before you get ready to work with that thing.
