District, dad at odds over soldier photo
By the Herald staff
An 8-year-old's school project has caused a stir in West Richland.
The third-grader at Wiley Elementary included a photo of his father, Army Reserve Cpl. David Henes, in an autobiography assignment. The boy identified Henes as his hero.
But school leaders asked that the photo be replaced because it shows the soldier, who's in uniform, holding an M-16. The request upset Henes, 34, because carrying a weapon is part of his job, he said.
"It's just a picture of an American soldier," he said.
Mike Kirby, the district's assistant superintendent, said the request wasn't meant to be hurtful or offensive. School staffers thought a picture of Henes in uniform without a weapon would be more appropriate for the classroom, he said.
Henes agreed to switch out the photos, and his son was able to present the project, he said.
But "we're providing freedom. Part of that freedom (comes because) we're an armed force," he said. "... I don't think this is a fair thing."

Assholes with leftist agendas, like Mike Kirby, are why we home school.Last edited by Pa. Patriot; April 30th, 2009 at 11:46 AM. Reason: grammar!

Home school, and it's non-conformist ways.....just the mention of it sends the liberals running to get their tinfoil hats....I love it! I had the opportunity to try both sides of the schooling systems, and if I had to choose, I'd easily opt for homeschooling....I learned a lot more in a few hours doing that than in an entire day at public school.
And on the "picture of a gun being offensive" bid.....To keep myself from going on an hour long rant, I'll just leave it at this: liberal, agenda pushing, bunch of pussies....Government is not reason, it is not eloquence - it is force! Like fire it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action. - George Washington

I can't help but wonder if the boys Dad was a LEO and took the same type picture if the school board would have made him "delete" it.

All they asked for was a picture without a gun in it. Is it really that big a deal?

Yes! We do a great disservice to our children when we systematically lie to them about the realities of the world.
"... a picture of Henes in uniform without a weapon would be more appropriate for the classroom, ..."
This man is a soldier and (I'm assuming here) an infantryman. The rifle is the fundamental tool of what he does. Denying that denies much of who he is. He offers to put his life on the line in one-to-one combat. He deserves the honor of being represented fully and factually.
Do you think that a picture of a military pilot standing in front of his plane would be rejected? Even though his weapon has the capability of projecting death and destruction measured in thousands of lives and square miles. But it is relatively detached and "clean".
I'm not suggesting that we force the children to watch close-up combat footage. But at the same time totally avoiding any reference to the difficult and dangerous jobs that get done to secure the very good life that those children are living cheapens the lives of both the soldier, and the children.
Both deserve honesty.Keep perspective, recognize the good in your enemies and the bad in your friends.
