The guy they're after is a university professor, and therefore one of the liberal elite. Police don't need 'assault weapons' to get him, a simple semi-automatic one is sufficient. The poor guy just had a bad day, afterall, and some republican probably disagreed with him over some petty thing like the economy or global warming. Of course the two evil Republicans were turning his wife into a Libertarian with all of their talk of freedom and small government. It combined with her social liberties to create a monster he no longer recognized. For taking away his means of affection the evil bastards had it coming.
