New to me S&W 66-1
Found this homeless 66-1 the other day when I was on one of my "treasure hunts".
It's a classic pinned and recessed Smith that was made in 1980. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but it locks up nice and tight and looks like it's been well cared for.
Here it is with my 66-2 wearing Grashorn Elk bone grips

Yeah I can keep my gun pretty clean, but my cylinder bore would NEVER come that clean man...

Re: New to me S&W 66-1
just seriese.
For instance, my model 65 is actualy Model 65-4. means that it has 4th revision - or improvement - in it.
My 656 is just 656. Indicate that its early(1982) production weapon. Current 686 is like 686-5?
Like cars, manufacture improves stuff as production goes on. But unlike cars, they do not make changes every year. So it would be pretty impractical to call it, say.."1986 Smith and Wesson Model 686", as likely 686 produced in 1985 and 1986 is SAME...Audemus jura nostra defendere

Re: New to me S&W 66-1
The big difference between a model 66-1 vs a 66-2 is the 66-1 is pinned and recessed. S&W stopped pinning the barrels of their guns and recessing the cylinders of their magnums in 1982.
You'll also notice that they moved the S&W logo from the right side of the gun on the 66-1, to the left side on the 66-2.
