Shoot from n the pocket ?
I read on this board (and others) occasionally, about having a small revolver or automatic that easily fits in the pocket.
The ASSUMPTION is that if all else fails and you just can't possibly draw, you can shoot this gun or that gun from inside the pocket and this one or the other one will shot/not shoot, the hammer will snag in the pocket, the slide will bind, ejection will not occur properly, the gun will jam from lint, or . . . . and on and on , ad infinitum, nauseamque.
So, the question is: "Have YOU ever shot a firearm from inside a pocket?"
If so, "What happened?" (Did it function as intended? Did you experience a jam? Did it continue to fire until empty?) Details, pelase?
And if my curiosity is not satisfied by your responses, I will put on a pair of sacrificial jeans and a jacket that I detest when I go to the range next week and simply find out for mine own self.
I will start with a Charter Arms Undercover 38SPL, and will continue with a KelTec P-11 - mainly because those two are my primary and preferred carry items. After that, I might move on to the P3AT, just to see what this is all about. I don't supose a 1911-A1 would be much of a "pocket-gun", but by the time I've gotten through the aforementioned, It might become a "what-the-heck" day, and why not go for the extreme, and just kinda live it up.
The more I think on this, the more appealing that range-day seems. So, you guys just go ahead and tell me what you have done, (someone might just comment on what they expect, even though they haven't tried it) and I'll keep my curiosity tuned.
I'll let you know what happens.
Jeff, are you up for a day at the range?

Re: Shoot from n the pocket ?
That sounds like a FANTASTIC idea! I don't think I'll try any pocket shooting, although maybe I'll see how my P229 does from inside a coat pocket. Let me check my work schedule, I'm sure a morning shoot would do well!
Regards,
Jeff

I know we are talking handguns and not rifles, but I would let somebody else test it. Wait... That's you! Awaiting for your report, Lefty
(I hope you know what you are doing because it scares me)

No one will be able to accuse you of having hairy palms.

Re: Shoot from n the pocket ?
I shot a few rounds through a .357/.38 snub in my army field jacket...I hit the target, but I also caught my coat on fire (mild flare up and smoldering). It also made my hand really hot and a little numb, presumably from the recoil force/shock wave/concussive muzzle blast). Had I not been wearing gloves, I don't doubt that I would have walked away with some mild burns.
It'll work in a pinch, but I wouldn't really rely on an auto-loader in that scenario unless you have exceptionally big pockets...there's not enough room for the slide to fully cycle in a reliable manner in most coat or jacket pockets in my experience.

This thread has "bad idea" written all over it.
Make sure you have a pair of emergency pants in the car.

Maybe try shooting throw a pocket when you're not wearing the pants. Then if all goes well, try it while wearing the pants.
Not to mention that if you can get a grip on the gun and shoot from inside the pocket, IMHO there's no reason you can't shoot from directly above the pocket, where the gun's mechanism won't get effed up.Safety is a good tool for tyrants; no one can be against safety.

Re: Shoot from n the pocket ?
This definitely sounds like a complete means of last resort and not something that should be practiced due to the risks pointed out earlier in the thread.
Shoot gun in pocket. Fire happens and is hot. !Panic! Cannot get your hand out of pocket. Scared for life. Can no longer use that hand for guns.
Send your idea to Mythbusters. Let them try it in a controlled and safe environment.Your freedom to be you includes my freedom to be free from you. -Andrew Wilkow
