    Default Math question....

    Ok, I have a square. It's 10 foot by 10 foot.

making a 45 degree angle through the square, what is that distance? I'm NOT smarter than a fifth grader.

    Pythagorean theorem

    a^2 + b^2 = c^2
    (10x10) + (10x10) = c^2
    100+100=c^2
    √200 = 14.142

    Simple geometry a squared + b squared = c squared

a and b being the sides of the triangle and c being the hypotenuse (the long angled side)

    http://www.1728.com/pytproof.htm

So if you know the 2 sides (which you do) the hypotenuse would be the square root of the square of the two sides, added together, 200 in your case, or 14.142135623730951

    a^2 + b^2 = c^2 where c is hypotenuse, what you are looking for.

    So solve for c, c = sqrt(a^2+b^2) = sqrt((10x10) + (10x10)) = sqrt(100 + 100) = sqrt(200) = 14.1421....

    That is the pythagorean theorem.

    No .... here's the math

    10 x 10 (side one) = 100
    10 x 10 (side two) = 100

    100 + 100 = 200

square root of 200 is 14.142135623730951

It's REALLY fun when you start using it in an applied method! I spent several years working with an engineer doing smoke stacks and exhaust breeching systems (I was a draftsman) ... you walk into a build and diesel generator A here in position X and the smoke stack is in position Y with a billion things in the way and you have to get from point X to point Y as easily as possible.

Really cool stuff once you master it.

Oh , I'll be the first to admit that the better portion of my disdain for the subject is my attitude and general lack of interest in it . I'll always remember my feelings towards High School Algebra . Give me a real life example where I will need to know any of these AxB over C formulas , and Ill pay attention , otherwise teach me PRACTICAL Stuff , like how to balance a check book or a budget . Since I had NO intention of being an engineer or rocket scientist or anything remotely similar , learning that stuff was a waste , and took up valuable brain cells .

Interestingly enough , this DID in fact come back to bite me in the ass in one way in my mid teens . At the time Top Gun was the "it " movie . My folks had taken us all on a vacation to California , flying into Frisco and driving down US 1 all the way to Diego . By coincedence , there happened to be a Blue Angels Airshow at Miramar the weekend we were in San Diego . So we went , I got the autographs of all the pilots , my Mom got a picture of me snapping a salute in front of the " Fightertown USA " hanger from the movie .
And I discovered that I could actually get paid to fly such incredible toys ?!?!?
Mom went so far as to inquire about a "sponsorship " from Rob Andrews to the Naval Academy . Right up to the point I learned I basically had to be a friggin aeronautical engineer to make it through flight school . What with my whole hatred and disdain for math , that career choice quickly went bye bye . My idea had pretty much been , put me in the seat , pull back to go up , push forward to go down , left is left , right is right and wheres the target ???
What the hell do I need to know about Bernoli's Principles of Aerodynamics for ???
