Default SBR returned to long gun

I know this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it doing a search...

Anyway, I'm thinking about getting a short upper for my AR15, but I also want to be able to put the stock upper back on.
    Is this feasible?
I really don't want to contact the BATF everytime I swap over.

once the gun is a SBR, you can actually have any length barrel on it.

the ATF doesn't need to be notified at all unless you are making a PERMANENT change.

basically, if you SBR the gun at 11.5" barrel, you can still put a 6" barrel on it, or a 20" barrel on it no problem.

a long barrel wont get any odd looks from LE wanting to see forms, but a short barrel looks like a machine gun, and will get attention.

I've used my SBR AR15 in lengths as small as 4" barrel in 22lr, to a 20" bull for accuracy...no problemsl.

however once a serial number is registered as an sbr, it will always be an sbr, no matter what length barrel is on it when it's sold.
it's only metal, we can out think it....

Sorry to say, thats incorrect. you are thinking of ATFs "once a MG, always a MG rule" that they apply...

a SBR can be returned from SBR status to regular title 1 merely by returning the configuration to Title 1 OAL and Barrel length, and sending the ATF a letter asking them to remove it from the registry as a SBR.
It will remain in the registry as being returned to title 1.
They will return a letter notifying you of the change in status, no tax will be refunded.
