    Default Ar-15 Lower Question

If a lower is 5.56 will that be all it can ever be? Ive noticed "convention kits" to pistol rounds and .22. I'm wanting to jump to 7.62 WITHOUT buying a totally new rifle. Anything i can do?

No. You can do other things, but you will need lots of new parts, more or less a completely new upper...

The 5.56 lower can be adapted to several other calibers including the 7.62x39 but you have to have the correct upper to match your caliber (other than for a .22, then you can use a conversion kit).

Ive known about the upper having to be changed at lest. Sooo basically a 7.62 total upper should work? My .223/5.56 lower will accept 7.62 mags?

It will accept 7.62x39 AR mag. Not 7.62 (.308) mag

you can go to 7.62x39, but not 7.62x51 (308) that requires an AR-10 style platform.

and X39 uppers will consistently break bolt lugs off, as the bolt is hogged out too much to accept the larger case head.

I had a Colt x39 upper, and after the 4th bolt broke, i replaced it, and sold it, and used an AK.

add that quality mags are difficult to find... oddly, USA mags suck in EVRYTHING but an AR15 in x39.. thier frankenmags consisted of a AK mag with a straight AR tower spot welded on, and they worked flawlessly.

I've seen uppers for ARs in the following:

    .17 Mach IV
    204 Ruger
    5.45x39
    22lr
    22mag
    222
    223
    5.7x28mm
    30carbine
    32acp
    357 mag
    380
    9mm
    40SW
    41AE
    44mag
    45acp
    458 SOCOM
    50AE
    50 Beowulf

    probably other available no doubt.

Ahh thanks alot for this helpful info every1, now will my lower take a 7.62 mag no mods? Any back round of the rounds mentioned on the threat Mojo posted. Just started getting heavly into rifles with this AR-15. Forgive my lack of adding the x.39
