Default Starting 1st AR Build Suggestions Welcome

New to building blk Rfl's(AR's) and would appreciate quality ideas.

    Going w/ A4 flt top

A2 front site or flip down?

Carbine or Mid length (Both 16")

    Stocks that you like/dislike

    Etc. Etc.
? RRA sells the "R-4 Barrel" that has the narrow spot @ about where the Gas block would go on the mid length. Whats the story as I know enough to get myself in trouble.
    Thanks In advance

Anymore, it's a mater of what you can find---not so much what you want.

    Me---

    A2 front site
    16" mid length
Magpul CTR stock / Vltor mod stock
    Eotech / aimpoint
Arms 40L or troy flip rear site

It would be helpful if you were to say what the intended use(es) is.

Target rifle? Range plinker? Bet-your-life-on-it-reliable SHTF gun? Just cuz it looks cool gun?

Some features are better suited than others depending on what you want the rifle to do.

Congrats on the build! You won't regret it.
I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Congrats on your first build.... Careful though, they are addicting.

Like EM stated, what is it's primary purpose?
Budget is also a big factory...
    What is yours?

    My preference:

    Carbine length
Flip up front & rear BUIS
LMT SOPMOD or Magpul CTR Stock
    Magpul MIAD or MOE grip
    Daniel Defense Omega Rail System
    Aimpoint
A sling that you are comfortable with (I recommend a two-point sling)
    And some training courses
    ZRT -SECTOR-7
"If you do not stand behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them" - Unknown
"Incoming fire has the right of way" - Murphy's Military Laws
"Fast is fine, accuracy is final" - Larry Vickers

Midlength, A2 sight/ gas block, Vltor or LMT stock (new magpul looks promising, too).

A midlength bbl will not be "narrower" where the gas block goes, it would be full thickness.....you can not alternate between gas system lengths on the same bbl.

I also prefer a non folding rear sight if you intend to use only irons, optional folding rear sight if you're gonna use a dot, mandatory folding rear sight with magnified optics.

Grips, handguards, and other accessories to fit personal needs and tastes.

Here is the AR I built, only a couple small details have been changed.

    Personaly,

I like the 1/7 twist Vanadium alloy so I'm good to go with hevier bullets (I like the 68 & 77gr) and the Vanadium alloy holds up better than chrome moly in high heat, high round count use.

For gas system, I like carbine on a 16" or shorter rifle but that is just what I prefer no real reason for it.

The step down in the barrel is actually to mount a grenade launcher and IMHO is absolutely useless on a civilian rifle. Not to mention I am a stickler for barrel harmonics (it's an accuracy thing) and the step down in the barrel plays hell on harmonics.

For a front sire on a flat top rifle, I prefer a flip up front sight, a std A2 nags the hell out of me when seeing it thru a red dot or eotech etc etc.

Flip up rear sight is great to use in conjuction with an eotech and flip up front for co-witnessing the sights just to be "sure"

For a stock on a SHTF rifle, I prefer the basic 6 position. Bells and wistles are just something more to break.
