Newbie AR-15 Question
Just built my first AR-15. Not sure if the safety is correct. I can only put the safety on if the rifle is cocked. After the trigger is pulled & the rifle is uncocked, I cannot move the safety lever to the safe position. Is this normal?
Also, I just have the standard A2 stock. I tightened up the screw which pulls the stock to the buffer tube really tight, but the stock is still a little loose. Is there a spacer or something that I'm missing between the stock & the lower receiver?Last edited by MMH; April 3rd, 2009 at 01:27 AM.

Re: Newbie AR-15 Question
Then there's something wrong with your rifle as it should not be able to be "safed" without being cocked. The hammer must be cocked for the AR rifle to be placed on safe. The OP's rifle is functioning correctly. Part of the manual of arms with the M-16 is a function check that verifies that the rifle behaves in exactly such a manner after disassembly and reassembly.
Also, XJ's are glorified station wagons, gimme a long arm lifted TJ any day. hehehe

Re: Newbie AR-15 Question
How would you even assemble it in such as way as to make it malfunction like that? Actually...now that I think about it, it was like this when I got it as a lower only, before I refinished it and put in a new LPK and GA DMR trigger...
sorry to thread jack...
Call her a glorified station wagon to her face!

Re: Newbie AR-15 Question
In relation to the OP...check for part #26, the buttstock spacer.
Am I to understand that the receiver extension tube is tight, it is just the stock itself that is loose?

Re: Newbie AR-15 Question
Many times those buttstock screws have a plastic thread locker painted on them and are just really tight to wind down the last turn.
I have a BIG two foot long screwdriver for that purpose.

Re: Newbie AR-15 Question
Yes, spacer was on. The issue was that the bolt had too thick a build of the parkerization. I muscled it on w/ a BIG properly fitting screwdriver, but it was not bottoming out on the stock. I took the stock off and threaded the bolt into the buffer tube, and when it started to get tight, I clamped down on it w/ some vise grips & then used the bolt to chase it's own threads. Pulled bolt out, stock & buffer on, and reassembled & all is tight!
Will post pics later!
