That would be the Three Mile Island accident. I was not even born at that point, but I do remember my mom telling me stories about it. She was pregnant with my oldest brother and living in central NY (45 minutes east of Syracuse). She remembers hearing that she shouldn't travel between the mountain ranges (Adirondacks and Catskills) due to possible fallout.

Yeah, or that trailer park hick town in TN or wherever where the local road paving moron was spraying carcinogenic oil on the roads...

That was a good call too... TMI wasn't that big of a deal. The "possible consequences" really worked to further the no-nuke agenda, eh? Thank god we're finally starting to build a few more reactor-driven power gen stations.

I'd say the worst industrial accident of all time may be a Chernobyl/Bhopal tie. One of my mentors made his millions designing risk management systems after the Union Carbide methyl-isocyanate gas incident in Bhopal. Gary Powers... god bless his soul.

As an environmental biologist, I'll be the first one to say that many of the environmental standards that we're required to adhere to are largely based on the SWAG-method of deduction (aka Scientific Wild Assed Guess). For instance, I once read that the EPA exposure limit to radioactive potassium is lower than what is normally found naturally in the average banana.

With that said, we dodged a MAJOR bullet at TMI. Run a Google search on Chernobyl and read a little. Better yet, if you have a strong stomach, Google "photos of Chernobyl babies". That's some messed up stuff there.

The Russian army literally burned out thousands of soldiers while trying to contain and bury the reactor. These guys, in heavy protective suits, were exposed to several lifetimes of radiation and they weren't allowed to stay longer than 40 seconds. Walk up, dump your bucket of concrete, walk away. That quick.

Yes cancer does occur naturally. I've lost several family members to it. We also lived down wind of Shippingport, PA. Ionizing radiation just accelerates the mutation of cells several bizzillion times. If you really want to depress yourself try to find some of the work of a guy named Earnest Sternglass, a professor from the Pittsburgh area. Did some research around (I think it was Alliquippa) the area after Shippingport vented for over a year in the early 70s (73 or 74).

Not being overly dramatic, this is some scary stuff here. We need to respect it more than we do. Yes, if contained properly it is an amazing power source. I'm convinced, though, that if the average mom out there were to turn off American Idol and really understand what it can do when it gets out, there would not be a nuke plant left open inside of two years.

Sorry to be such a buzzkill.
