N.J. Teen Accused of Child Porn for Posting Nude Photos of Self

TRENTON, New Jersey — 14-year-old New Jersey girl has been accused of child pornography for posting nearly 30 explicit nude pictures of herself on MySpace.com — charges that could force her to register as a sex offender if convicted.

The case comes as prosecutors nationwide pursue child pornography cases resulting from kids sending nude photos to one another over cell phones and e-mail.

Legal experts, though, could not recall another case of a child pornography charge resulting from a teen's posting to a social networking site.

MySpace would not comment on the New Jersey investigation, but the company has a team that reviews its network for inappropriate images.

In the New Jersey case, the Passaic County Sheriff's Office investigated and discovered the girl had posted the "very explicit" photos of herself, sheriff's spokesman Bill Maer said Thursday.

"We consider this case a wake-up call to parents," Maer said. The girl posted the photos because "she wanted her boyfriend to see them," he said.

The teen, whose name has not been released because of her age, was charged with possession and distribution of child pornography. She was released to her mother's custody.

If convicted of the distribution charge, she would be forced to register with the state as a sex offender. She also could face up to 17 years in jail, though such a stiff sentence is unlikely.

I've heard of this before, teens being charged with child porn for posting pics of themselves.

But she's 14. 17yrs in jail and register as a sex offender? WTF.
Minors have commited murder and gotten less punishment.

If she's a registered sex offender, and can't live within 200 yrds of a child, does that mean she can't live within 200 yrds of herself?

Not a legal expert, but the case is not likely to go anywhere. Back in the 80's, when Traci Lords was outed, the producers were accused of Child Porn. They presented a successful defense, since Traci had presented false identification. Traci was not prosecuted since the child porn laws are meant to prevent the exploitation of the minor. It was pointless to prosecute the responsible minor who is considered the victim.

Yea and besides it violates the 5th amendment. If that isn't self incrimination I don't know what is.

This is getting out of control. The child porn laws need a serious overhaul. Kids posting pictures of themselves don't need to be jailed or to be registered as a sex offender. They need to be helped by other means. Even if that means their parents spanking their rear!

Saw this story last night on the news and just shook my head in astonishment at the stupidity that has become the norm in this country ... seriously does ANYONE have their hand on the flush handle cause the bowl is definitely full.

If I was this girls parents (after beating her ass for doing something so stupid) would get a constitutional lawyer and fight this all the way to the supreme court.

If parents actually parented their kids we wouldn't be having all these issues. I for one think these kids get all they deserve. It doesn't matter if it's kids distributing the materials or adults, it's still nude pictures of people under 18 the law doesn't provide and exemption for kids distributing or having possession of it. maybe this whole fiasco will wake up all these kids a parents and they'll get their acts together
