The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a plan to set up a new "volunteer corps" and consider whether "a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people" should be developed.


The new bill specifically references the possibilities "if all individuals in the United States were expected to perform national service or were required to perform a certain amount of national service."

Groups of such "volunteers," would, under the legislation, be "grouped together as appropriate in campuses for operational, support, and boarding purposes. The Corps campus for a unit shall be in a facility or central location established as the operational headquarters and boarding place for the unit. … There shall be a superintendent for each camp."

How can freedom be defended by anything but freedom. Freedom to choose to serve among them. I hate the draft and selective service. I remember when Obama said that the US military could no longer protect us, and that we needed a National Civilian Security force.

First off, when has the US military NOT been enough to kick ass, second, even if they couldn't protect us, I believe the reason is because they are over seas. Bring them the fuck home, to protect the country they are apart of. (Borders anyone?)

I promise you that my children will never take part in any service project that I don't approve. The federal government can put out all the guidelines and such that it wants to. If they impose required community service on our children, my kids will be volunteering for the Isaac Walton League, Trout Unlimited, etc. They will never be part of any brown-shirt style campaign.
That rates right up there with going house to house to collect guns.

I most definitely don't like the direction this is being pushed but................

I do think some form of service should be an obligation, whether it be on the Federal level or maybe State or Community. It shouldn't be a case of "serve or go to jail" though. I think maybe the closest analogy I can come up with is from the Heinlein book Starship Troopers. Want to vote? Serve your Country or Community in some form for X number of years. I think that would give people a better foundation to base decisions on when weighing the factors involved in electing government officials or voting on public issues.

I'm sure this won't be a particularly popular view but I'm okay with that.

I think the founders and plenty of important advocates for liberty throughout history have expressed their disgust for the any form of compulsory service.

Even entertaining the idea that something like required military service has benefits (and it certainly would have many benefits) it still takes away the freedom of the individual...and after all that's what this country is founded on.

I'm of the belief that any conflict that is right and just will attract sufficient volunteers to its cause and this has been proven throughout history.

BUT, let's not turn this into a larger discussion of the draft and similar things.

Let's discuss how scary this is...this is basically recruiting and requiring the youth of America to become socialist youth brigades for things like "Climate Cops" and other social programs. Hitler would be proud.

I'm also scared this will eventually result in the majority of the young and able under government control so they cannot resist the coming tyranny. They will all be serving in brownshirt brigades or overseas fighting other countries' wars.

The schools are just training camps to prepare the children for government servitude and the colleges are just designed to enfore liberal theology and saddle productive citizens with debt so they can never truly be productive.

If it comes down to it, I may make a professional website split down by state, and people can put their names down and "PLEDGE..." to not participate in any forced service.

I could make it exactly like usaservice.org... except with protest events. I could make a complete mockery of their service site and it would look just as professional....

I did the front page of Heinz.com, I'm sure I could make a huge stink if I wanted to, they just have to piss me off enough.

Oh goodie, now that Obama shows that he approves of this type of service let's impose the draft so we can give the guard & reserves a break in Afghanistan. He could use them for border patrol in Mexico too.
