    Default Gun question? photo included

    S&W .32 caliber Breech loader 5 shot...

My question is… My dad thinks this gun will blow up if shot with today’s high power ammo…
What do you think is it safe to shoot?

It is true about the difference in loads. I wouldnt shoot it because it just might blow up in your face although I dont think it would blow up. You need to find out what the power level of the loads way back when were versus today. Also make sure they didnt change the size of the bullet. I'm more of a collector and feel that these type of guns only get more valuable the older they get and in the same condition but a lot more people dont feel the same as me.

Just do your research on the bullets and if they appear close enough then go for it.
Reputation is what I strive for.

    looks like a safety hammerless.
also known as a lemon squeezer.
the 32 were not as popular as the 38s.
it's one of imporant guns of history. i agree that it really should'nt be fired, not really due to safety, put lack of parts if something were to break.
it's well over 100 years old.
it's only metal, we can out think it....

    Hi Adam.
It's a S&W Safety Hammerless, in .32 S&W short. I am no expert on which model version it is. For the .38's there where 5 models.
Ammo is still made. The current ammo is loaded very lite. New ammo is uses smokeless powder, the original is black powder.
Safety alway goes with have a gunsmith eval the gun before shooting.
I have a .38 version. I do shoot it, and several other top breaks that I have, which include a H&R that was a comperable model.
I am sure that someone on here will post better info than I can.
For me, if I checked the gun out and it passed, I would shoot it.
For value, take a look on Gunbroker and Auctionarms, search for S&W Safety Hammerless, and see what they are going for. Looks like the finish is in great shape, if the mechanics are good, and the bore, I would guess about $400, but I am not an expert, could be some rare variation or such.
