    because of the design of my home, it's behind a certain door in condition 3. No kids, infrequent visitors, and rarely anyone not ME in that space.
    The last thing I want to do is hurt you... but believe me, it's on the damned list.

    Beside the bed with boxes of various shells on the night stand. (slugs / buckshot)
    Also;
    Magazine loaded (6, 2 3/4 00BK) , chamber empty, safety on.

    Its still new so a little extra precaution never hurt. I pick it up too much and fool with it all the time so having nothing in the chamber is mandatory still. Safety is just extra. Eventually it will have one in the chamber so its simply a soft click for the safety off. I see no benefit of the shotgun racking noise. I have a very large doberman. If you get past him, you are armed, and not going to be deterred by a shotgun coming on line. I would rather them NOT think a shotgun was coming to ready and figure it out when their insides end up on my hallway wall.

    The 12 gauge is still just too new of a toy not to pick it up as I'm going past it every once and again. So what I do, and see as ideal are not the same at the moment.

    *edit* decided to add what I have, so the poster below can see what people are using as their HD shotguns.

    Remington 870 Tactical
    Breaching choke / 2 round extension / tapped receiver for top rail / poly stock and forend / 18" barrel

    I chose the option known as other and you asked me to explain. So here goes. I do not have a shotgun yet but wanted to inject myself into this thread. If I am looking for a Home Defense shotgun, what should I get? Gauge, make, model, and price I should expect to pay for it. This would only be used for home defense.

    My suggestion would be a Mossberg 500/590. For a nice one with accessories expect about $300-$400.

    I went with other as well. I keep it nearby with 4 rounds in a speedfeed stock, none in the mag or chamber, safety off.

    I went with the option in the chamber safety on. I dont know of anyone that will will come into my house and find where i keep my gun and then pick it up and flip the safety off and pull the trigger. My way of thinking is more of the practical approach rather than a safety approach. I want kids to know how to disarm a weopon, or stay clear of one. Thats how i learned first hand how to handle a gun and learn through first hand experience. Probably its a good thing that not everybody thinks like me though. I can see the plus of a burglar breaking in and hearing a shotgun being racked though. I kind of want to shoot my gun though not just scare em off....

    Full mag tube, hot chamber, safety on. No kids, no idiots, no guns masquerading as clubs at 3:00am.
