safe handling issue
Just read in Sundy paper, front page, about an experienced LEO who shot himself in his left palm while disassembling a .45 Glock for cleaning. after removing the mag, and thinking he had cleared the chamber, pulled the trigger to dry fire so the slide could be moved to the rear for dissembly. my question is, will a Glock .45 fire a chambered round with the mag removed? I know many semis will not.I'm not familer with this peice.

Re: safe handling issue
I don't know about all S&W pistols, but I know my S&W 6906 has the magazine disconnect and will not fire a chambered round when the magazine is not seated.

Re: safe handling issue
Star Firestar has a mag safety too.
Sounds like the officer either got his steps mixed up, and "cleared" with the mag inserted, or just forgot to clear. Always check at least twice... maybe 16-18 times just to be sure.

Re: safe handling issue
I believe its optional on some s&p pistols.
My brother has an M&P40 which has it, but I know there was an option to have the gun without it.

Re: safe handling issue
Just FYI...this incident is being discussed in another thread more generally.
I for one don't like to go +1 with the GLOCK 27 when I have it in anything but the SERPA CQC, it really makes me uneasy, but thats another topic...How pissed are you gonna be if you die before the Zombie Apocalypse comes? - - IANAL

Re: safe handling issue
ditto on this I have S&W 5906 that will not also
Our dept. use to let us carry our own but only
the S&W 5906 & part of the choosing was for
that reason. If your fighting someone over
control of your pistol, you can drop the mag
during the scuffle then the weapon will not
fire.Last edited by Ronnies111; March 2nd, 2009 at 09:51 AM.

Re: safe handling issue
It seems it's mostly S&W(including some walther models) and Beretta pistols that I have seen with magazine disconnects on them.
With that being said IM surprised we dont see more "bathroom" ND's...I hear people at shops all the time saying "when im in the bathroom sometimes I just pull my gun out to look at it"

Re: safe handling issue
I'm pretty sure most Ruger semi-autos have mag disconnects too.
When I bought my first Glock, a used 17L, I damn near shot my truck's windshield out. When you put the gun in the plastic (what else?) Glock box, you have to pull the trigger too as there is a molded in boss that fits through the trigger guard.
Well, the Glock was my first semi-auto back in 1987. Just as I was going to pull the trigger, a little voice told me to check the chamber...good thing too!

Re: safe handling issue
My Walther P22 will not fire a round if the magazine is out.
