Bore Snakes

Okay, who uses bore snakes to clean their guns? If you do, how do you clean all the dirty lube, powder residue, etc off of it? Do you just use hot soapy water?

I have always just used patches pulled through with the weed whacker string---but now i got a few bore snakes and they are getting dirtier than my guns.

I use bore snakes on most of my guns. When they are dirty I just throw them into the washing machine with my rags/dirty work clothes etc. They come out clean and work well. Just don't throw them in to the machine with your wife's cashmere sweater, major drama...

I've not used mine enough to need to wash it. I don't care for it... never seems to clean as well as a rod/brush/patch.

As for throwing it in the washing machine. That's one sure way to become single again.

Works great. I tie them off in an old sock to keep them from knotting up.

i LOVE my bore snakes... EM, I seem to have the opposite experience than you. I think it gets my bores CLEANER than when I am using a patch/rod, etc.

I havent dirtied them up enough to wash them yet, but the directions say to put them in a "delicates bag" and then throw them in the washer.

By hand or in the washing machine. As previously stated, in an old sock or some other type of "bag", and definitely NOT with anything your wife may value.
Maybe with old work clothes or shop rags or something.
I haven't gotten mine dirty enough to need to wash it yet.

When using a Bore Snake, do you use solvents or do you run it through the barrel dry? I've been thinking about giving one a try.

I cant even find one for .223/5.56 locally.

I have one for every rifle and handgun caliber I own. They are great and I've washed them a few times. I still regularly clean my with a brass brush and rod.

But there is no substitute for a good brushing.

I usually put some oil on the bore snake just in front of the sewn-in brush.

I really dont think these are intended to be used in place of a proper cleaning kit.



I use mine both before and after shooting. Before to remove those questionable little things in the barrel that accumulated since the last outing. This also provides a check that your bore is clear of obstructions.



After shooting I use it again 2-3 times, then a final pass with the tail end sprayed down with Rem oil to clean and protect the bore with some oil.
