    Default Cop's Gun Found?????

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Pennsylvania State Police are investigating whether any laws were violated when a city police officer’s gun was found in a public restroom.

Montoursville Police Chief Dan Strailey said Thursday that the gun was found Feb. 10 in the women’s room of a department store in his borough. He says a customer alerted store management, who in turn called police.

Strailey says the gun belonged to a patrolman in the Williamsport police, who reportedly lent it to a female acquaintance who had a permit to carry a gun. Since the Williamsport officer has a brother who works for the borough of Montoursville, the investigation was turned over to state police.

The state trooper assigned to the case says the investigation is continuing

    WOW

I don't know where to begin.

I'm very interested in seeing the results of this investigation.
While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.

I like how they leave it vague enough to allow the readers to think that it was his duty gun.

Yeah, how about that. I'll bet you a dozen donuts it wasn't his duty gun.

I kinda would like to know how they found out it belong to the officer???

I mean, gee, they wouldn't have used the "NON-EXISTANT" date base would they??? LOL

I also agree how they make it out to be the officer's "DUTY WEAPON" but more than likely, it was a personal sidearm lent to his G/F. Like some of us have never lent a firearm to a friend for use.

This article just reeks of bad reporting, making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Like the officer is responsible for the actions of what appears to be an adult who has a LTCF. If anyone should be responsible here, its the female who had possession of the firearm.

Now, a few questions. Is there any legal constraints about loaning a pistol to a friend?

Is it a crime to inadvertantly leave a firearm in a public place?
What if any criminal liability is the officer subject to?

Unless I am wrong I do not believe you can give or loan a friend a handgun, unless it is family, or so I thought. Now if I am wrong please someone correct me.

As for the investigation, it will be like the scranton police investigation, and we all know how well that went.

Yes. The recipient must either be licensed, or exempt from licensing.(§6115)

Explicitly? No, but other charges may apply depending on the totality of circumstances. I can't imagine that any charge requiring an element of intent could apply, as a "mistake" obviously isn't intentional.

If the report of the recipient possessing a LTCF is accurate, none that I'm aware of.

Meaning what? I know the article is thin, but despite my well-know status as a "cop-hater", I'm not seeing anything that suggests a hint of illegal activity by the officer who owned the firearm.
