Ar .22 conversions
Anyone done it and how is it working for you? What conversion did you use? I been kinda kicking the ideal around for awhile and think it would be fun on a plinking range and since its still a AR it cant hurt the practice and its cheaper ammo.

Re: Ar .22 conversions
I have a Ceiner kit for my AR. It works 99% and any failures are ammo related. It's also decently accurate at 75 yds. I have read about lead fouling the barrel and gas system but I haven't had any problems. tThere was an article in Shotgun News about a gunsmith that built an AR for his kids to shoot .22 using a ceiner kit. He only shot .22's thru the rifle...thousands of rounds. He experienced no fouling issues in the barrel and none in the gas system. He checked it even though its technically not used for the .22 kit. Still, after shooting .22's thru my AR, I fire a handfule of .223 to blow out anything of the gas system and scrub the bore with a brush.

Re: Ar .22 conversions
I have the spikes tactical .22LR conversion kit. It is VERY picky with ammo. But every single round that makes it in the chamber goes bang. And I've put hundreds (400-600) through it in the limited time I've owned it. I've had it out to 50ish yds with a red dot and it's extremely accurate. (16" 1x9 twist lite barrel) I typically blast a mag of .223 out of it when I am done (and sometimes in between) to 'clean' the gas system out. But I don't think you would really need to for hundred upon hundreds of rounds...
Overall what I have found as long as you run federal through it it works. If you do not run federal through it, it does not fucking work at all.
And by "not work" I mean the most annoying non-chambering, then stovepiping, shell jamming crap you have ever dealt with. And then you have to drop the mag, clear it... OR... pound the offending round into the chamber with the bolt by using the charging handle as a ram. Reinsert mag... and do it again on the next round. See also; remington ammo. All of it.
Which completely takes any fun out of it at all.
I run federal auto match through it ($14 for 325 @ wally world) and it runs about 90%.

Re: Ar .22 conversions
I was actually looking at the CMMG drop in kit. Seems it can be had about 250ish with 3 mags or 200ish with 1 mag. the weapon will still be getting .233 fed through it just .22 is cheaper and well I can get more fun time if its cheaper.
Seems like as long as you run quality ammo it isnt a problem from what you guys are saying.Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom.JFK

Re: Ar .22 conversions
I run Black Dog Machine mags thru mine. The dark smoke are nice for loading since you can see where you're at and they have a good feel. With the panic, prices have shot up just like everything else.

Re: Ar .22 conversions
So I got the CMMG kit with blackdog mag's. Had it at the range and it works really well as long as you make sure the first round seats all the way. I had the 1st round jam the first few mag's and after that it was no prob's so it might have just been a bit tight. I sent 400rnds at the plinkers tonight and its a blast and WAY cheaper than .223.
Inside of the gun was filthy afterwards but its gets cleaned no matter what so not a big deal.
FWIW I was shooting Remington hyper velocity with it.Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom.JFK

Re: Ar .22 conversions
I have the Spikes upper and it ran great in FA right out of the box - suppressed.
Unsuppressed, haven't gotten it reliable in even semi auto. I just got a brick of their "latest" ammo recommendation (changes almost weekly) and will try tuning it this weekend. I'll report back.
That being said, it seems like most people do well with them.
