    Default Ayoob Books

Looking to pick up some books on CC (covering legal, carrying & tactics). Realize that Ayoob is the authority. Are his older books still valid? Any specific recommendations on which books to get? Also, are there other authors that I should consider?

I like his books and they are a good reference source. But I don't use them as my primary source.

Find a good instructor then you can have a two way conversation.

Would not hurt to look at this site for its many videos on all subjects
you mentioned. www.gunvideo.com I have several that contain
    excellent information.

You definitely want "In the Gravest Extreme : The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection" It is a required text for his Lethal Force Institute Class and well worth the money. You can get it here

Incidentally, given your interest in the topic, I would highly recommend taking the LFI-1 course. It is expensive and time consuming, but can tell you your understanding of these issues will never be better than when you leave the course.

Oh yeah, If you have kids, his "Gunproof Your Children" book is very good as well.

One more edit to add that while I agree with you that Ayoob is the authority, he would be the first to tell you many others have much to teach on the subject. He references Jeff Cooper quite a bit, and Coopers' "Principles of Personal Defense" should also be on your list.

I very recently bought "In the Gravest Extreme" but have not yet gotten into it.

I also bought "On Killing" by Lt Col Dave Grossman and just started reading it. It doesn't contain training info but was suggested to me by my first tactical pistol instructor.

I rounded out my mini book buying spree with a copy of "Armed America" by Kyle Cassidy.

Back on topic, I have a couple of Jim Crews training manuals entitled "Some of the Answer, Handgun" and "Some of the answer, Urban Carbine-Revised"

These Crews books have a lot of good info but I haven't read enough by other authors to make a comparison.

Jim Crews came to Pittsburgh to teach a handgun instructors class which i decided not to take. I wish I had

I highly recommend The Gun Digest Book Of Concealed Carry. It is an excellent survey of essential CCW topics, from guns and holsters to legal issues. I'm just finishing my copy and was very satisfied.
