How do you prevent bump firing?
I was at the range today with my 1911 only today. The purpose was to work on recoil control and trigger control. I got so in tuned to the recoil control that I was using the momentum of the slide going back into battery to help put the sites back on target. On the same shots I was concentrating on slow squeezes on the trigger ensuring a surprise bang.
Three times the pistol was back to exactly the same position before I moved my trigger finger. I don’t know what upsets me more, the fact that other than at the range that is dangerous as hell or those second shots drilled the center of the target.
I am looking for suggestions to stop it. It might go away naturally with practice. What do you think?

Re: How do you prevent bump firing?
Most people are practicing so they CAN bump fire. If you have it controlled then use it to your advantage.

Re: How do you prevent bump firing?
I am kind of tickled that I stumbled on how to do it but I am not comfortable doing it with this pistol yet. Maybe in another 500 rnds.
My trigger control is terrible with this pistol. When I can make nice groups regularly, then I will play.

Just don't post video on Youtube.
There's already enough footage on there making gun owners look like yahoos as it is.
I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Re: How do you prevent bump firing?
After changing out my main spring on my PX4 I noticed its VERY easy to get into a groove with it and go now. My groups arent as tight if I do it but they arent horrible either.
I gota agree with Empty for to many idiots on youtube.Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom.JFK

Re: How do you prevent bump firing?
I know what your talking about I've done it several times
& NOT intending to. Yes It's a hell of a suprise when
your not expecting it. Like you also I was practicing trigger
control & grip on a new 1911 Kimber.
My first shot was on POA
& the next was almost touching the first hole. Each time it
happened I was concentrating on my grip & trigger pull at
the same time. It must have something to do with the 1911.
Because I've been shooting over 40 yrs & it only happens when
I'm getting use to a new..1911.
Untill I read your post I never
put the 2 together. It's never happened with any other pistol's
& I got all makes, types etc.. Never any other than a 1911..hummm?
I looked at it as a screw up & dangerous. When it happens
it scares the shit out of you because even though the round was
on target..it was not planned.
I always thought DAM what if
someone else was around & I shot them? O..shit..If yours happened like
mine ...2 shots sounded almost like one it was so quick? Is that
the way yours sounded? But like the other guy said about learning
to control it..never crossed my mind. I always thought
DAM I'm glad no one was around!
PS: You were talking about a suprise bang...Hell it doesn't get any
better than that, does it?Last edited by Ronnies111; February 15th, 2009 at 06:38 AM.

Re: How do you prevent bump firing?
The first time it happened, I might not have picked up on it other than the two flashes. It was very fast. As fast as Glock with an auto sear.
It is strange how the mind works. I have shot many thousands of rounds before this with only one report. It was so foreign to my mind it almost didn't register.

Re: How do you prevent bump firing?
As ya'll surmised, I think it is mainly about getting used to a new weapon. I do believe you'll learn to control it with more range time.
I bought a G34 a couple of weeks ago and was bump firing quite a bit before I got used to the new, much lighter trigger (compared to my G21SF, G19 and others that I've fired).Last edited by RuralTom; February 15th, 2009 at 11:49 AM. Reason: spelling, as usual...

Re: How do you prevent bump firing?
The amazing thing is I have about 750 rnds through this pistol. I was blaming everything. Crappy ammo, inconsistent barrel lockup, and anything else I could blame it on but I really knew it was not the pistol. For some reason, until this weekend, I could not put my finger on the problem. I was pulling so much I was compensating by anticipating. I pulled back many targets that looked like they had been hit by a short barreled 10 ga loaded with 000 buck.
This weekend I put 94 out of 100 through a ragged 8" hole.
Next weekend I will try to induce the problem and post a video on Google videos since no one likes Youtube.
Thanks for being a sounding board.
