SCRANTON -- A city police officer received stitches to his left hand after his gun accidentally discharged inside a West Scranton grocery store Sunday afternoon, according to Chief David Elliott.

Lt. Leonard Namiotka, an 18-year-department veteran and head of the city's crime prevention unit, was allegedly showing his weapon to someone in the freezer section at the rear of Brunetti's Shur-Save Super Market, 441 N. Main Ave., at 4:20 p.m. when the gun accidentally discharged, striking the off-duty officer in the hand with a.40-caliber round.

Scranton police are conducting an internal investigation into the incident, and until it is finished, Lt. Namiotka will be placed on desk duty, according to the chief. The officer was out of the office Monday on sick leave, Chief Elliott said.

oh, great. not only did this dumbass shoot himself in the hand, but he jeopardized the life of people shopping in Brunetti's, and he'll probably get the place posted, too.

A lot of "accidents" happen when you put your booger hook on the bang switch.

/not to mention when you also carry +1 100% of the time... but we won't go there right now.

Oh, excuse me, let me rack my slide before I shoot you ...I'll just be 1 sec.

I remember a news report on a picnic...(PAFOA maybe) where the reporter commented on the fact that no one ever removed a weapon from a holster to show it to her even when she asked about them...what kind of COP goes, "Oh, yeah sure friend, take a look at this." WTF?

I love how shit like this automaticly gets labeled as an AD. It's only an AD if the gun malfunctioned but if his booger picker was on the bang switch then it was an ND which is usually the case.

I had to explain the difference to someone close to me while I was patching a hole in the roof over the weekend!!

On a side note, The M1 carbine may not have the best stopping power BUT it sure doesn't lack penetration!! A 110gr FMJ will go thru 1/2 sheetrock, a 2x6 cieling joist, TWO layeres of 3x4 plywood and still retain enough speed to got thru a 2x10 rafter (true 2" 1800's rafter)and 1" thick barn board roof without ever stopping!

exactly. with modern pistols, there's no such thing as "accidental", only negligent.

You know I think we need another abbreviation for discharges.

    We have

    AD - accidental discharge
    ND - negligent discharge

but I think we need to add

    MD - moron's discharge

KEEP THE GOD DAMNED FINGER OFF THE MOTHER FUCKING TRIGGER MORON!

In the case of the one I dealt with over the weekend I think I'll stick with the ND for now LOL!! The person that did it had a hard enough time dealing with it without me calling it and then explaining the MD abb. to HER. But I do agree with your line of thinking.
