Default Can pregnant women use firearms safely?

Are pregnant women able to use firearms>?

I dont mean I'm going to have my girlfriend shooting shotguns or rifles but she wants to try out the handgun.

I think it's a good skill to have especially at a time like this in her life, incase im not around and something happens god forbid.

I'll ask the doctor at our monthly visit on monday as well but I figured I'd throw it on the forums and see what you folks have to say.

Any of your wives shoot while pregnant?

I don't have an answer, and I don't know if you tried searching, but here's an old thread I found on this subject:

I was a LE firearms instructor and had to qualify pregnant agents at times. Our policy was:

    1. Okay from Doctor
    2. Wear surgical gloves and facemask to reduce possiblitity of lead contamination.
    3. Only shoot outdoor range with jacketed ammo(lead contamination)
    4. Limit shooting to qualification only (60 rds) to reduce posible damage to fetus from noise.
    5. I would clean their gun (once again contaminants).

In short take precautions against lead contamination and limit shooting only if doctor says okay. This would preclude her from spending a day as a spectator at the range due to the noise issue.

You really have to explain everything to the doctor and go with his/her instructions (notice I didn't say advice!).

The most comprehensive resource I could find on the subject is at http://gemini.tntech.edu/~cpardue/pregnant.html.

Unless something changed in the last 35 years or so , yes , my wife never quit shooting during the 3 times she was pregnant .
Don't blame me ; I voted for an American .

I never thought of the noise aspect of it.

    Have any friends with supressors?

Noise and lead are both serious concerns. Noise more so than lead, since lead exposure can be minimized by mom, but you can't equip junior with ear protection. I'd be interested to hear what your doctor says. I couldn't find any hard answers online but I found one study in sheep that suggests that impulse noise is well transmitted into the abdominal cavity.

EDIT: I see this is discussed in the much better link posted above

this is something we discussed, the immediate physical impact the act of shooting would have on the baby. I automatically put shotguns/rifles on the ban list until the baby is born. I was still in question of handguns, however if others have discussed this and came up with the same results it's better to just not go shooting until the baby is born. I didn't even consider the lead issue...

Anyways we'll probably just wait, but I'll ask the doctor monday and see what the response is then post it for you folks. thanks for the input everyone!

Maybe limit your shooting to .22s?

That's what I was thinking. .22 rifles or supressed handguns.
