Re: Good Cheap Carry gun
For under 300 I would suggest a kel-tec, they make a couple. Are you looking for 9mm or...

.32

.380

They also have a optional clip that attaches to them that allows it to hook to you belt like a pocket knife.

Yeah, KelTec's P11 or PF9. Both shoot reliably and are easy to carry. Not the best range piece but fine for defensive practice.

Taurus 85's can be found on the used market for under $300. If you are unfamiliar they are a 5 shot 38 spl revolver. If I only had $300 to spend on a defensive weapon, I would look for a used weapon in decent shape.

Re: Good Cheap Carry gun
I think you'll have a tough time finding a Glock under $300...maybe closer to $400.
However, you might fnd find a Ruger semi-auto for $300 or so. I don't know why, but Ruger semi-auto's just don't seem to hold their prices like the revolvers do.
I think you'll find more small revolvers in your price range...Taurus 85 or Rossi. Can't say anything about the older (pre-Taurus) Rossi's, but I've had 5 or 6 Taurus 85's over the last 15-20 years. All have been nice and reliable. Still have 2 small Taurus revolvers (one for 10-12 years now).
BTW, all prices I've written were for used guns.Last edited by RoyJackson; January 29th, 2009 at 08:10 AM.

Re: Good Cheap Carry gun
Good Luck!!
Unfortunately, your search will likely not bear the fruit you would like, given the parameters of price, caliber, intended use, and ergonomics you detail.
I would suggest that you save-up and purchase a firearm that meets your stated requirements.
Or you could do something similar, by putting the firearm that best satisfies you on lay-away.
Either of these suggestions will provide the firearm that you need with the qualities that you desire.
Once again, the best of luck in your quest!!
Stay well.

Re: Good Cheap Carry gun
"Good" and "cheap" are not words that mingle well together when talking about weapons for carry. The above poster suggests going 'used', and I concur. I would not suggest .380 caliber, as the ammo is expensive for what it is, and I myself wouldn't use. 9mm is a decent alternative, although it isn't priced as it should be either, but better than .380. I would also suggest looking at a used S&W j-frame revolver in 38spl flavor. It fits almost all of your requirements, not a semi though.

Re: Good Cheap Carry gun
Look for a new or used Beretta Brigadier. It's a small, low cost 9MM. As said before, look for something used.
