Re: Stupid kid tricks
Geez... can an M80 really do that much damage? When I grew up, farmers used to use them to clear the fields of crows and such, and we used to light them off all the time. I shudder now.

"Latrobe police said the teenager was playing with a large firecracker like an M-80 in his grandmother's house."
Sounds like a "quarter stick" to me._________________________________________

I mean, there aren't enough details in the story to determine whether or not the kid removed himself from the gene pool... if so, I can't argue with natural selection...

Just more media sensationalism, like "assault type weapon" or "semi automatic handgun." Now they need to attack "M-80's."
I am by no means an explosive expert, but I just do not believe an M-80 could do that much damage to a 17 year old. I do not even believe a "quarter stick" (by todays standards) could. Maybe a true quarter stick, maybe. But, the ones I've seen lately don't 'measure up' to the quarter sticks we used to get when I was younger.

Re: Stupid kid tricks
A "quarter stick", as used in the fireworks industry, will most definitely have the potential to do enough damage to result in loosing a limb, particularly when contained (between the thighs!)
People poo-pooing this idea end up like the kid in the newspaper article_________________________________________

I bet he doesn't have the balls to do it again!
If God didn't intend us to have guns why would he have given us a trigger finger?

From "The Fireworks Alliance"
http://www.fireworksalliance.org/cgi...l?p=glossary#q
Quarter Stick - The original quarter sticks were similar to M80's, but were larger in size and contained 10 grams or more of flash powder. Quarter sticks were silver in color, four inches long, one inch in diameter, with a four inch green waterproof fuse sticking out the side. These items were so powerful that they could dismember and kill people who misused them. Quarter sticks were banned by the CPSC in 1966, and made illegal by the BATF (now ATFE) in the 1970's. Legal quarter sticks today contain 50 milligrams of flash powder, which is about 1/200th of the original quarter stick. Illegal quarter sticks can contain compositions that are extremely sensitive to shock and can injure of kill without warning. The ATFE imprisons people that are caught with illegal quarter sticks.
Still find it hard to believe that a 'legal commercial' "quarter stick" would blow off a leg.
