Remington or Savage
I am thinking about getting a .22 target rifle. I saw a few yesterday that I liked, now I'm asking the experts for opinions. Both are target rifles with a heavy barrel and thumbhole stock. The first was a Remington 597 for $350. The second was a Savage MKII for $307. I don't have any experience with either of these models. I know some will chime in with "get a 10/22", but I'm not really interested in them. I'm not looking for something to customize. I would like to find something that I like the look and feel of right out of the box. I like the look of the heavy barrel, but does it really have any advantages in a .22 rifle? TIA for the opinions and advice.

Re: Remington or Savage
I will say that I'm most pleased with my Savage MKII, with a heavy barrel and Accutrigger. If the gun you are looking at does not have the Accutrigger, I'd pass on it and look for a Savage that did.

Re: Remington or Savage
I don't own either but have shot both. The bolt action Savage along w/ the accutrigger should shoot rings around the semi Remington and it won't jam. I know there are 597 lovers out there but the threads on rimfirecentral from those who have had various problems w/ the Remingtons seem to outnumber the problems anyone mentions w/ their MkII's.

I don't have any experience with the Remington, but I do have a 17HMR Savage. Great rifle, super accurate. I can't imagine the 22 version could be very far off.

Re: Remington or Savage
Get the savage. My EX had one of the Remington's and the magazines are the biggest pieces of garbage I've ever seen.
I can't say enough terrible things about the quality of the magazines. They're cheaper than a bus stop hooker and they get chewed up faster than a bottle of vicodin at a halfway house.
Get the savage, and don't look back.Last edited by P-11 shooter; January 23rd, 2009 at 06:28 PM.

Re: Remington or Savage
I picked up a Savage a few months ago and love it. It has a Mako stock, bull barrel, and the Accutrigger. I can keep 10 rounds inside a quarter at 50 yards. I paid just under $500 for the gun, scope, and rings. I'm gonna add a bipod to it shortly. I would say go with the Savage. I know Dick's sporting goods sells them with thumbhole stocks and bull barrel for $299.
