Old Guy Advice...about performance...?
Hi guys,
My eyes aren't as strong as they were when younger. I might be now 20/150ish? With contacts I get to 20/20, but growing tired of contacts. Has anyone here had any corrective surgery on their eyes? I'm concerned about my eyes getting damaged, with all the stories about Lasik mishaps lately(FDA ramping up, etc.). Been looking into PRK, no blade involved.
So any stories would help. Thank you,

I haven't but have relatives who have . In every case I am familiar with it worked great but after 4 or 5 years they were right back where they were before surgery .
Don't blame me ; I voted for an American .

I'm nearsighted, so paying and getting back to where I start sucks. Do you remember which surgery they had?

Can't help you with info on Lasik or other eye surgery. But, the biggest problem for shooters is near focus! Very difficult to focus correctly on the front sight for accurate rifle/pistol shooting. To counter that I use my prescription reading glasses for target shooting (with either iron or red dot sights) and my regular glasses for defensive shooting or hunting (I use 'scoped rifles). The advantage for the scopes and red dot is the optics put target and aiming point on the same plane so you need only focus on one thing. And btw if you must wear prescription glasses for astigmatism, be sure to wear them when using a red dot!
Good Luck!

Re: Old Guy Advice...about performance...?
I asked my optometrist (sp?) about vision correction surgery. He said while he doesn't perform the procedure, he would recommend a doctor. I then asked him if he personally has had the procedure....he said "I wear contacts".
It isn't a permanent procedure from what I understand, as your eyes age, they will continue to change thus negating the benefits of the procedure.

Re: Old Guy Advice...about performance...?
I am extremely nearsighted and have worn glasses since I was 4 years old. I asked my doctor about Lasik at around age 45. He pointed out that I was going to need reading glasses a couple years after surgery anyway. Sure enough, at 49 I got progressive lenses because my arms became too short to allow me to read.

Re: Old Guy Advice...about performance...?
I was chatting with other guys, and found a certain desire that I might want to become a LEO. Being a firefighter and EMT, add on LEO, the only other boyhood dreams is astronaut and cowboy. I found to get ACT 120 certified, I have to have at least my dominant eye 20/70 or better, (uncorrected) and my non-dominant eye 20/200 (uncorrected) or better.
I don't meet these levels. So if a job later comes up and my vision is in question, I want to be able to do something about it.
Thx,
