Re: M14
Considered buying one myself. Had an M14 many years ago in the Marine Corp.
Great rifle. However, I just ended up buying an FNAR made by FNHUSA. Really, really like it! Web site if fnhusa.com. Also a great review on the Gunblast site.

Re: M14
I have an M1A Socom 16. Love it. All ammo is a bit pricy now, but .308 is easy enough to find.
Good M14 mags are about $35.00-$40.00. Cheap ones do not work. Stick with Springfield's own, or US surplus only.
Great gun, no problems as of yet.

Re: M14
I have some M1A's and find them to be excellent rifles and very reliable IMHO. Had a friend who had a Norinco (I think) copy and it did not fair as well, seemed to be very crudely machined to me. Stick with MilSurp mags as they seem to always function correctly.

Re: M14
I have the same exact rifle, except my example was made years ago by Armscorp. It is a problem gun. Noisy, destructive, accurate, reliable and annoyingly consistent. Everyone else thinks this a good thing.
Seriously, M1As and semi-M14s are great rifles, easy to service and frequently capable of exceptional accuracy. Parts are (or were) readily available as New Old Stock from former military stores or commercial equivalents.
Armscorp & Springfield are good & USGI. There are a few other good brands, the names escape me at the moment.
I must be firing mine too fast, as it gets heat shimmer fairly quick. It's a product-improved M1 rifle, so the sights are low to the barrel.

Especially since folks were saying that the Armscorp receivers weren't correct in their receiver-to-bolt lockup fit. We put ****m on the H&R bolt lugs, and assembled things to see what would happen. No problem, there was excellent receiver engagement on both lugs.
We had a USGI, torch-cut receiver we could compare some dimensions to, and the Armscorp receiver was spot-on. I paid particular attention to the barrel axis and oprod track, because my gun was going to be used frequently in High Power competion. Accuracy with the Krieger barrel and reliability were tops in my priorities, I didn't need an oprod dismount during a string of fire, etc.
Compared to the Springfield Armory receivers we had on the bench, I was tickled pink. *
The serial number is fairly low, 111xx, so I don't know what range the supposed "problems" happened with the Armscorp M14NM and M21 series. I'd gladly buy one again.
Another place to look at M14/M1A info:

Re: M14
In over a thousand rounds, my M1A has not once failed to feed, fire, or eject. It has proven itself to be supremely reliable. Quite accurate too, for stock iron sights.
Any mission, any conditions, any foe at any range.
Twice the mayhem, triple the force.
Ten times the action, total hardcore.
