    Default Mosin Question

this is a question my brother has: he bought a Mosin Nagant from a coworker, for $75. it's stamped Springfield Armory, 1917. it's still in decent shape, the guy said it still shoots. it does need the sights worked on, but other than that, it seems to be in good working order. is $75 a fair price, or did my brother get hosed? he already has a SKS, and he wanted a bolt action, in case he needed to hunt with it (he's a bit of a hermit). also, how much more expensive 7.62x54mmR, in comparison to 7.62x39mm? thanks everybody.

$75 isn't Bad and actually better than what they go for over the counter these days, Your Brother did well.

You don't say what model Mosin 91/30 - M44 - M38 etc...But like the Previous Poster I never heard of one being marked SA - I have heard that Westinghouse made a bunch and I think Remington.

7.62x54R is running about $80 for a can of 440rounds -- It's been awhile since I bought any 7.62x39 But the last time I did I think it was going $180 per 1K

    Good Luck and Enjoy

Are you sure it's not a 1917 Springfield?

All you need for reference is http://7.62x54r.net/ tons of good stuff about Mosins there.

If it still has the Peter the Great crest on the receiver you can add at least 50 bucks to the value.

Springfield made barrels for Westinghouse. Here is the SA x2 proof mark:

    Surplus 54R is going up.
    Still affordable though.

There are some Companies making hunting ammo.

Reloading is pricey to set up.
Bullets are real hard to find.
    Brass is hard to find.

As for reloading, also keep in mind that almost all of the bulk ammo is not reload-able...

That's what I mean. You need to buy new brass.
    Then find .312 bullets.
