Five found guilty of plotting to kill Fort Dix soldiers

(CNN) -- A jury has found five men guilty of conspiring to kill soldiers at Fort Dix, New Jersey, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office said Monday.
Five men were accused in a plot to kill soldiers at Fort Dix in New Jersey.

Five men were accused in a plot to kill soldiers at Fort Dix in New Jersey.

The defendants were acquitted of attempted murder charges but face life in prison.

The jury spent six days deliberating.

Six men were arrested on May 7, 2007, in New Jersey, as two of them were meeting a confidential government witness "to purchase three AK-47 automatic machine guns and four semi-automatic M-16s to be used in an attack they had been planning from at least January 2006," according to a criminal complaint.

The sixth defendant, Agron Abdullahu, pleaded guilty in October to a reduced charge of providing firearms to illegal aliens and received a sentence of 20 months in prison and three years of supervised release.

Abdullahu told the court in October that, from January 2006 to May 2007, he and Turkish-born Serdar Tatar provided firearms to brothers Dritan Duka, Shain Duka and Eljvir "Elvis" Duka.

The Duka brothers, born in the former Yugoslavia, were in the United States illegally.

Tatar and Abdullahu are both legal U.S. residents. The other defendant, Jordanian-born Mohamad Ibrahim Shnewer, is the only U.S. citizen among them.

The alleged Fort Dix plot came to light when two men gave an 8 mm videotape to a clerk at a Circuit City store in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and asked him to convert it to DVD format.

Authorities said the tape showed 10 young men shooting at a practice range and shouting in Arabic, "Allahu Akbar," or "God is great."

The clerk, Brian Morgenstern, said the video showed the men with handguns and rifles that appeared to be "fully automatic weapons."

"I saw some stuff on the film that was disturbing and it kind of gained my attention that way," he told CNN in May 2007.

Morgenstern alerted the police, who initiated the investigation into the men, who were living in Philadelphia's southern New Jersey suburbs

I can understand the aquittal on attempted murder, since there was no actual attempt. If they had been captured making an armed assault on Ft. Dix, that would be different.

What I don't understand though is why there were no weapons charges brought for which they were found guilty, or was that part just glossed over in the article. If they were in fact in possession of automatic weapons, they should have been charged with violations of NFA '34.

And they would have been. The Circuit City clerk is a complete moron. But I guess we should be thankful: if his IQ were two points lower, he'd have said they had "what looked like nuclear weapons," and the press would have faithfully quoted him as if he weren't an idiot.

A moron? Because he can't tell an SKS from an AK or an AR from an M16? I know a lot of people are willfully ignorant of this distinction, but he's just a guy who works in Circuit City. He's not a senator trying to take away your AR. I know plenty of smart people who aren't into guns and would not be able to tell various flavors of EBRs apart. At least this guy stepped up and helped bust a real live terrorist plot. He could have just looked the other way and gone back to searching for porn on customer computers.

Yep, a moron--for not even realizing that he hasn't the foggiest what a "fully automatic weapon" is, and shutting his yap. Anyone who says, "Looks to me like it's a..." without knowing what "a..." even is, should have quit talking while he was ahead.

Sure--and I betcha money they wouldn't attempt to identify an EBR, for exactly that reason.

There wasn't any terrorist plot until an FBI agent provocateur sold them on the idea and coaxed then to buy nonexistent RPGs from him. The "Fort Dix Six" (one of them must have been misplaced?) were a bunch of big-talking boobs, only a bit less laughable than the "Miami Seven"--and the plot they were talked into was to assault a military base. Yup, real scary stuff, indeed!

    They were here illegally.

Dont care much what they busted them for, as long as they dump them off US soil.
