Single Action colt 45
Now bear with me on this question. It makes me ill to describe the situation but here goes. I recently took a CEO position at a French-owned company. They acquired a private American company late last year. The owner of the American company, a gun afficianado, presented the President of the Board of Directors with a brand new Model P1850 Colt Single Action Army. It is mounted in a display case that is meant to be hung on the wall. Now of course the President of the board, a Frenchman through and through, abhors guns but does not want to dishonor himself by refusing the gift. And at the same time he does not want it hanging in the office as is due to the risk of it being stolen and potentially used in a crime. He has asked that it be disabled (permanently!). I know that this would be a travesty...how would they like it if we decided to disable the Statue of Liberty by removing her head? OK, here's the dilemnna.
Can the handgun be disabled without causing permanent damage? I don't know enough about these particular types of handguns to know if this is possible. I am considering making an offer to buy the gun from the Board President but am concerned that he may be offended that a gift is being sold off. Then again, he will never take it home to Paris and it does him no good hanging on our office wall in an impotent state of being. It's a beautiful piece and I don't want to see it disfigured. What say you?
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin

If the firing pin is on the hammer, remove it. It will either turn out, or come out after drifting a pin out. ..can do much with it after that.
Could be one piece hammer & pin too.. then you gotta think of something elseLast edited by knight0334; December 18th, 2008 at 10:21 PM.

I believe you should be able to remove the mainspring if you take off the grips.

Threaten to kick him, he's French and will surrender... Just kidding...
Taking out the mainspring will disable it. Taking out a firing pin will disable it. If the firing pin is connected to the hammer, you CAN grind it off... Just don't tell me, I don't wanna cry... lol
Bolt the box to a stud, and replace the display glass with Plexi-glass...

Forget all that other stuff. Offer to replace it for free with a shiny, Colt replica that was made permanently disabled. I doubt anyone will ever notice, and everyone will be happy, especially you.
Something like this:

Re: Single Action colt 45
I'll one up that. In the spirit of many Three Stooges episodes, I would sneak in at night and replace with an exact copy, only you knowing the wiser.

If you just disable it, there is no guarantee it won't get stolen off the wall, and easily restored to a function state by the thief. I like the replica idea!
