Default Tactical reload practice - using spent brass?

While practicing tactical reloads at home, I start with an empty mag in and the slide locked to the rear. I'll put a couple rounds of spent brass in my 'reload' mags so I can practice hitting the slide-release or slide/cock reloads.

Are there any gouge issues with the feed ramps?

If this isn't a good way to do it, how can I practice w/o letting the slide slam forward?

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Curious what pistol you're using?

I was taught not to use the slide-lock on a Glock to allow the slide to go forward because it may break the slide lock.

For reload I was taught to grab the slide and pull it back with conviction.

    Kimber Custom II

Not sure about not using the slide lock - I've never heard that you shouldn't use it. Sure, it may be a wear item, but an easily replaced one at that.

It's only with a Glock, no problem with most 1911 slide locks.

And I wouldn't want one to break on my Glock in the middle of a gun fight, no matter how easy it may be.

This is what dummy or inert rounds are used for. You can either buy them, or an experienced reloader can make inert rounds from components.

The theory beyond tap rack is that it places every autoloader into battery whereas the controls for a slide release can differ from gun to gun.

At least that's what I've been taught.

without reading the responses to your post i would suggest finding a girlfriend and practicing with her on a friday night. i have never met a girl who did not appreciate a good solid tactical reload.

I practice a tactical reload with an empty slides, and of course with no round in the chamber.

A tactial reload doesn't require any slide manipulation. The purpose of a tactical reload is to replenish a low/empty magazine supply with a fresh magazine while there is a live round in the chamber.
