What is this bullet?
We were digging through a late family member's gun memorabilia and found this. We're curious what it could be. We thought, by the looks of it, that it may be something akin to a Minie ball but, at this size, we're not sure.
As you can see, it:
- looks to be made of [cast?] lead
- is 1.020" in diameter at its widest point
- is 0.886" wide at its base
- is 2.010" long
- weight is 8 oz (3500 grain)
- has gas check rings
- looks to have a concave base
- looks to have either lead oxide in the base or some old residue from something
I have uploaded some photos as well. Hoping they'll help.Last edited by RKillcrazy; February 16th, 2025 at 03:58 PM. Reason: added accurate measurements

Re: What is this bullet?
My thoughts are a small bore cannon. I have never seen anything like that fired from a rifle. It's very interesting. It reminds me of a giant mini ball from the civil war.

If you want an ID you should post it on the IAA forum. Those are the cartridge/ammo experts.
It could be something for an unusual hunting gun, like a 4 gauge gun.
It could be military, there were various guns and cannon with smaller bores tested 100+ years ago.In America arms are free merchandise such that anyone who has the capital may make their houses into armories and their gardens into parks of artillery. - Ira Allen, 1796

Re: What is this bullet?
He was a WWII vet; he was in the European theater. While he brought things home once the war was over, he also collected things throughout the remainder of his life so, you never knew what you'd find when you'd go into his gun room.
I'm assuming you mean these guys: https://forum.cartridgecollectors.org/Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6...

.90 cal.jpg
I am told this is a .90 Caliber once fired rifle slug. Seems nasty on both sides.
