Default 🦌Chronic Wasting Disease detected in new area within Pennsylvania

😷 PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Game Commission has announced that two deer have tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in a new area.

The adult male deers who tested positive were in Luzerne County and are 40 miles from the nearest wild CWD detection. The commission said that this discovery will result in changes to their Disease Management Area (DMA) later in the spring.

CWD is an always-fatal neurological disease caused by a misfolded protein called a prion. Both deer and elk are affected by the diseases. It’s classified as a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) and is similar to scrapie in sheep, mad cow disease in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans.

One of the deers that tested positive was from a breeding facility and it tested positive on Dec. 16 and test results were sent to be confirmed by the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory. With positive results, the farm has been required to test any additional animals who die and has not been allowed to transfer any deer onto or off of the farm.

Any subsequent positive test results will extend the quarantine order requirements and restrictions for another five years.

CWD can be spread through direct animal-to-animal contact, but it can also be indirectly spread through prion-contaminated environments. The disease can be spread through saliva, urine, feces, and infected carcasses.

At this time there is no evidence that CWD can be spread to humans or other species under natural conditions. 👌

Aren't there telltale signs the deer is infected?

I read a report where they can be infected for a year before showing signs.
