Re: Remington 700s
I bought a 700 ADL Varmint at Dick's Sporting Goods back in 2011. The boys and girls at Remington were having a good day, as it shoots bug holes with little effort from me. She's a 308, too

My 1979 700ADL in 30-06 soldiers on.
Spend a day at the range with it and you will definitely know you did some shooting.

Re: Remington 700s
I have a similar age and style .308 that I also bought at Cabellas for $350 ( plus $50 Remington rebate). My plan was to tear it down for custom build, but it was ( and is) the most accurate factory rifle I have owned so its my hunting rifle. With the addition of Timney trigger it shoots .66 to .50 groups. ( a couple have gone .25).

Re: Remington 700s
It*s a disease building custom rifles off the older inexpensive 700s. There is no known cure. My PRS match rifle started as a $299 purchase at Walmart
I am about to order a barrel ( once I pick caliber) for a 700 short action I took apart a few weeks ago. It was a .243 varmint barrel, but the barrel was gone

Re: Remington 700s
Here is my USMC M40 clone.
I bought this rifle for cheap a couple years ago. It was a heavily water damaged Remington 40-X or 40-XC in 7.62 NATO with a stainless bull barrel and a bench rest stock. I think it was made in 1975. It was in a foam lined hard case in a basement that flooded several times, so the stock was rough and all metal was pitted, even the stainless barrel had pitting because the degrading foam of the case attacked it somehow. Never saw that before.
I soaked the action in Kroil to get it open, cleaned it up, plunge milled the old ejector out of the bolt face because it was rusted in place, replaced the trigger, and test fired it to confirm it was worth fixing.
I decided to go for a mid tier USMC M40 clone rifle, since it was a decent candidate. I found an appropriate Redfield base, rings, and 3-9x Accurange scope for it on ebay. This scope is a commercial gloss black version, and the military versions would of been flat black or green. Gunville.com sells the reproduction wood stocks. The correct sling swivels came from ebay. Bob at Legion Arms sourced the bottom metal, butt plate, and sling. He had stamps to put "US" above the serial number.
Bob at Legion Arms cleaned up the pitting as best he could (we decided not to go for 100% clean up), threaded the barrel for a suppressor, made a nice thread protector, and cerakoted it for me. Bob Also fit the stock, bedded it, and finished it.
Now it is ready to head to the range.

Re: Remington 700s
You can say that again!
All nice rifles! Never heard a bad word about a 700, except on 60 Minutes. Mine is a BDL in .243. 3x9 Leupold. Picked it up in 1976. Sub MOA on the days I do my part. I got a letter from Remington decades ago offering to pay postage both ways so they could make some "safety adjustments" to the trigger. Ahh, no thank you! Killed two deer. one shot each and a ton of groundhogs with that rifle. Now I'm just a paper puncher.
I loaded up 40 rounds about a month ago. Waiting for some less windy weather to take it out and do some 300-yard shooting.
Points awarded if you saw the 60 Minutes segment. Also, decades ago.
