LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — Investigators have released new details in what is now a deadly shooting out of Luzerne County.

Police cars lined Merry L Drive in Sugarloaf Township on Tuesday night. Investigators responded to the neighborhood near Drums just after 5:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived, the victim, John Rabbitz Jr., who later died, told them a man with a package knocked on his door. When he answered, police say he was shot twice in the chest, and the gunman took off.

When police asked Rabbitz Jr. if he knew the shooter, he said no. However, he did mention someone with a possible motive to harm him—William Snyder, his girlfriend's ex.

The woman told investigators she dated Snyder for about a month, but when they broke up, Snyder allegedly continued to pursue her, sending her text messages and photos and even showing up at her home unannounced.

The woman showed police messages she and Snyder exchanged before the murder.

According to court documents, Snyder said things like, "Nothing is going to stop me from pursuing you" and "Why can't we do this? There is no reason not to if you love me and miss me, then we can do this! If you still have those feelings for me, why do you continue to run away?"

State police confirmed to Newswatch 16 that Snyder is a former member of the Pennsylvania State Police. His employment ended in May 2023, although state police declined to disclose the reason for his departure.

Court documents reveal that Snyder was previously charged with stalking and harassment in June 2023.

Snyder is locked up in Luzerne County on homicide charges.
