Default 😲Carbon County man recovering from black bear attack

🐻 He was just looking for a hug anim_rofl2.gif

JIM THORPE, Pa. A Carbon County man is recovering at home after he was attacked by a bear Sunday in Jim Thorpe. A smaller black bear can be seen on security camera footage from a home, tackling Andrew Nierer and attacking him on the ground before it was shot and killed by a neighbor.

"She came and looked at him and then charged after me; at that point, I either make a decision on going farther to my house or to him to use the gun if he needs it," said Nierer.

"It just up and jumped on him and grabbed him by the arm and wrestling him around here, I had no choice but to kill the bear so that's what I did,” said Mike Bramich, Nierer’s neighbor.

A witness who works at Mason's Cold Beer across from Jim Thorpe Market's parking lot said she saw the bear emerge from the woods, run across the lot, and go right towards the market's ramp.

Once people saw the bear, they started screaming. The bear then ran up a nearby trail into the woods. Nierer was walking on this trail, returning from the store, when the bear attacked him.

"I just did what I needed to do, a man's life was at stake the bear was trying to get to his throat, so I did what I did, I had to do it,” said Bramich.

It's because of his neighbor's actions that Nierer considers himself lucky.

"She only minorly got me, like I got a little stitch on my arm and some scratch marks. I got lucky, I'm not hurt, I'm not offended at it at all, it's life,” said Nierer.

I used to go to that store occasionally!
It's pretty much right across the river from "downtown" where the train ride and courthouse are.

Was rabies confirmed? The last I saw was that the bear was going to be tested.

One of the many reasons that I carry around the house and in the yard. We have bears come through our yard every few days, when they're not hibernating. The arbor vitae in the front yard (20' from the front door) is a marking post for boars during the May-June mating season. It barely has any bark left on it.

The thing is, despite being a "small" bear, had the neighbor not had his pistol, that little bear was plenty big enough to have taken that guy down.
    And my soul's been psychedelicized

Gonna guess that he knows his neighbor carries and that's what prompted him to run in his direction.

Several news sources say the PA Game Commission has confirmed that the bear was rabid.

Bears with rabies are very rare. I have the full, clearer video, but it*s not mine to post. I*ve heard that it was 4 shots with a .40 to end the attack.

The guy who got bit had seen the bear, and went to warn the neighbor, as he has some hearing issues, and was concerned he wouldn*t hear it coming up the path from the market.
