Default Erie County Sheriff now offering LTCF through Permitium.

I just saw on the Erie County Sheriff's web page that they are accepting online LTCF applications through Permitium. Here is the link if anyone is interested.

Ugh. Why is it so hard for PA Sheriffs to follow the freaking law? Right on that webpage, it states that non-residents must fill out an additional form:

If you are a NON-RESIDENT of Pennsylvania looking to apply for a License to Carry Firearms, you must provide the following:

Your Out-of-State Concealed Carry License and ID as part of the application.
Complete the Out-of-State Concealed Carry Information Form (Click Here) and upload this document to the application
    Meanwhile, the law:
    PA § 6109 (c):
Form of application and content -- The application for a license to carry a firearm shall be uniform throughout this Commonwealth and shall be on a form prescribed by the Pennsylvania State Police. The form may contain provisions, not exceeding one page, to assure compliance with this section. Issuing authorities shall use only the application form prescribed by the Pennsylvania State Police.

A license shall not be issued to any of the following:

THIS, the Sheriff is well within the law. He also follows the law and issues to those out of state folks who fall within the guidelines above.

    No.

The law does not permit requiring applicants to fill out any forms beyond the one prescribed by the PSP, and additional forms are not required for a user to show the sheriff their license/permit from their home state. You may think this is no big deal, but it is a slippery slope that leads down a treacherous path.

The Susquehanna County sheriff tried this a few years back. I refused to fill out the additional form, met with him, and showed him the law. He realized that he was in violation and rescinded his demand that I fill it out. So, good on him.

It's not a big ask to expect our law enforcement offices to follow the law.

I think it means someone brought it to the Sheriff's attention, he reviewed the law, realized he was in violation, and decided to remove the requirement. If so, I think that reflects very well on him.

That said, while reviewing the online application, I found a few fields listed as required that are explicitly listed as optional on the official LTCF application. One is the email address, which, given that this is an online application, I could see as being "required if you opt to apply online." The other is employment and employer information.

So, overall, I'd say this was a big improvement, and I'd wager that if these remaining two issues were brought to the Sheriff's attention, he would address them as well.
