Default Recommendations on a .22LR Semi-Auto (see extra notes)

I'm kinda in the market for a .22LR semi-auto - kinda budget oriented though.

    1. Sub-$400.
    2. Full-sized, kinda matching the size of the manufacturers' centerfire guns. But I wont rule-out slightly smaller models. (*, I'll explain why)
    3. Magazines can be found easily and aren't over-priced(**, I'll explain why).
    4. Doesn't need to be "optics ready", but wouldn't hurt to have that option.
    5. Is likely to stand up to the test of time - something that will last.
    6. The ability to single-handedly charge the gun would be nice. Like some do-hickey handle, or strong enough rear sight to rack it off a table/bench.
    7. Reliable with a wide range of .22LR ammo. I know some guns like hyper stuff, some mid like "Mini-mags", some prefer Hi-Vel or standard velocity.
    8. Light-weight is ideal, but not absolutely needed.

This will only be a plinking pistol. No competitions, no hunting, no "official" target - just casually putting holes in cans, paper, etc.

    * - her hand is bigger than mine - long "piano player fingers"
** - the gun will be primarily for my old lady. She only has (1) arm, so I load up a bunch of magazines prior to the fun-time for her to empty. A shitload of pre-loaded mags allows me to have my range time as well.

I'll be honest, I don't have much experience with the .22LR semi-auto handgun genre. All my .22 handguns have been wheelguns or other design.

What arjohnson said. I've had mine for 125years and works great. I DO NOT take it apart to service though.
The last time I did that it ended up at my smiths.

Ruger Mk1/2/3/4 series. Cheap enough, reliable, accurate, modifiable to the ends of the earth if desired. They aren't light weight and the mag capacity is "meh" but those are about my only complaints. My Mk2 was shot to hell when I got it, has been shot to hell since then, and still runs with an occasional cleaning (not as big of a deal as it seems, but definitely nuanced).

Or if modern style, Keltec P17 or Taurus Tx22. Both reliable, and lightweight. The keltec is especially light. Long-long term i don't know how plastic will hold up, but that's a problem for a couple decades down the road.

Outside of that Ruger SR22 or Smith and Wesson MP series would be my next go to

Kel Tec P17 or Taurus TX22. I'd recommend a heavier recoil spring for the P17. Aides in long term reliability. The TX22 needs a better guide rod assembly. The stock one will beat up the slide and cause it to crack. Taurus may have fixed this, but it was an issue when I bought mine. A Lakeline recoil assembly solves the problem. I've over 3k rounds through my TX22 and it still runs great, and shows no sign of wear.

Both guns are lightweight, reliable, and easy to shoot and load. In the case of the TX22, it feels like a full size handgun. The ergonomics are pretty close to perfect for me. The P17 is the best $200 you can spend on a pistol. Not just a .22lr, ANY pistol. It is one of my favorite guns to take to the range. It pretty much lives in the side pouch of one of my pistol cases.

Dark horse candidate would be the Kel Tec CP33. I love that ray gun looking thing. As long as you load the mags correctly, it runs like a top. Stupid accurate with 33 rounds of fun on tap. Scratch the CP33, it's not easy to load with one hand. Fun gun, but doesn't fit the criteria.

Agree. Mk 1 was one I let go of and regret.
Never got into any mods, found them good to go off the bat.
My mk2 is a bull barrel that can shoot better than I ever will.
Wife settled on a mk3, 5" or so, as her walk around gun.
Have not found them to be picky about ammo..as of yet.
There's a reason why they've been around and so popular for so long.
Just glanced at PSA and standard models going for around $400.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

Take her to a gun shop that has a lot of 22lr pistols and let her pick out the one that fits HER hand. It will be HER gun so let HER pick the one SHE wants.
I always stressed to my son"one shot one kill that was all that is needed". When He came home from Marine Corp Boot camp He was telling me about the Marines stressing "ONE SHOT ONE KILL" He looks at me and the light bulb went on Dad was now a whole lot smarter than he was 13 weeks ago.
