Re: Best small 'bedside' pistol for elderly woman
A complete security system is probably in order. It sounds like if someone gets into the house with the woman she cannot protect herself in any way shape or form. I was discussing this scenario with a friend of mine that is five years older than me and she is concerned on how things will be when she cannot drive or defend herself in her own home. I put my Mom in an assisted living facility when she could no longer drive, do her own laundry or take care of the house. Mom was very happy there because she had people to talk to and help doing her laundry and have someone else do the cooking without burning down the house. My Mom would have never been able to handle a firearm at that stage nor would I let her try.

Re: Best small 'bedside' pistol for elderly woman
Thanks to all who responded.
Closest we got was a .22 revolver. But even that was too much for her. She ended up deciding to forego a gun. She's got (already had) a security system and pepper spray.
I have to admit being somewhat relieved... She's getting increasingly scared/paranoid. It's got to the point she's a couple times hit the alarm 'panic button' just from me pulling up to garage w/o calling her first. Don't fancy the notion of getting shot by my own mother b/c 'oops!'
"Move to PA, ma" I said. "You really shouldn't be alone 1,000 miles away from any family," I said. "There's a nice house for sale a just up the road." Doh! It was the right move, but outta-sight-outta-mind sure was easier.
I'll be putting the SP101 (.357 mag/.38 special with crimson-trace grip <50 rounds through it ever) in classifieds if anyone's interested. It'll at least cover a few of the 'false alarm' fees from the alarm co.DGAF

To get the Sp101 light enough for her to be able to pull the trigger it would not be reliable enough. S&W EZ would be best or a pistol caliber carbine. I agree a TASER is a good choice. No loud bang also.

I'm not sure how elderly or 'frail' we are talking about, but my vote would be for a S&W Model 617 or a Colt King Cobra in .22 lr, Loaded with CCI mini mags.
