Re: 🦌Some rural Pa. businesses want to see it switched back
I thought the opener always revolved on the seasonal rut!

Re: 🦌Some rural Pa. businesses want to see it switched back
I suspect the decrease in hunters is in part the result of anti-gun pressures where young people are discouraged or forbidden to have access to shooting sports, and communities that used to vend shooting products feeling the results of online shopping. Wasting disease and other weird pathologies may be discouraging a larger percentage than realized.
There was a time when a poor economy boosted hunting (and poaching), but that probably was more likely locals than travelers. The Game Commission exists to promote and accommodate hunting. The changed schedule has resulted in increased numbers taking advantage of additional opportunity to hunt, evidence of purpose accomplishment.
Society is in a constant state of change. Many hunting grounds are now houses, with more to come. Safety concerns result in changes in regulation, such as the straight-wall cartridge movement, for example.
Those of us who remember how things were with sadness will pass away. Those coming into the present without that barometer will shrug with acceptance. There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

I'm not a hunter but it sure seemed like moving the date was a bad idea.
It seemed to impact the season here, took away the special institution of it and jammed it up against Thanksgiving. I think it affected local businesses as well.

Re: 🦌Some rural Pa. businesses want to see it switched back
If I had my druthers, I would have kept the opening day on Monday. It was nice having the weekend to finalize things. I*ve never hunted from a camp, but I can see how moving the opener to Saturday affected the guys going to camp.
Do I care that the opener is on Saturday? No, it doesn*t affect me. I guess it*s hard for some people to take Monday off, so moving the opening day gives them a chance to get out for the first day.
I can see both sides of the coin and their reasons for their choice. Like I said, it is what it is. But, my choice, if given the chance would be Monday opener. Would it bother me if it kept on Saturday? Nope.

If it had been moved to the Saturday **before** Thanksgiving (i.e. a week earlier), I bet it would have been a better-accepted situation. Then you'd have sat and sun for anyone who wants, and camp guys who normally would take say monday and tues off can just take thurs/fri off instead to get the camp opened up and do some traditional 'hanging around.'
Cramming it up against Thanksgiving with only a day in between is really the root of the problem for the travelers.
Furthermore, lots of people get at least Thanksgiving off, so as a bonus there's an extra morning or potentially entire day (depends upon what you do for tgiving) right there in addition to the weekends.Strange women lying in ponds, distributing swords, is no basis for a system of government.
