Maintaining A Stainless Gun
Laugh if you will but I wanted to ask, I am soon to be in possession of a stainless steel frame gun. So, is it okay to use standard stuff like Hoppes and Ballistol and all that to clean it? It won't hurt it I assume?

No different than blued, even easier to maintain, just wipe it down with anything you are currently using, if it's a revolver fine grit scotchbrite is your friend around the forcing cone and the cylinder front face. I love my stainless revolvers, So easy to care for compared to blued especially if you happen to put a minor scratch or idiot mark on them the finish is very forgiving

Re: Maintaining A Stainless Gun
The burn rings from firing will return every time the revolver is shot. Removing them is wasted effort. Carbon build up is easily removed with solvents and brushes. Don*t use abrasives like Scotchbrite to clean your gun.

There's a special cloth you can get to remove those rings. It worked well on my S&W revolver. I can't remember the name of it though. It's non-abrasive, has a solution in the cloth and worked really well. Might be called lead remover and polishing cloth- Birchwood Casey.

Don't use scotch Brite ! There is a Yellow Rag Product with a cleanser that leaves the finish even better as if it were polished FLITZ Polishing Cloth comes to mind. And very easy to use quickly cleans my revolvers SS !

Re: Maintaining A Stainless Gun
You can clean the rings from the cylinder face with a brush and Hoppes- but be prepared to spend the rest of your life doing it. The product mentioned was a yellow cloth with a chemical compound. I haven't seen it in years, it was called "Lead Wipe Away".
Be advised that stainless steel formulated for firearms is not like stainless flatware. Give enough neglect, it will rust.Crusader's local #556 South Central Asia chapter

Re: Maintaining A Stainless Gun
Back in the day we used to use a Lewis Lead Remover kit to clean the forcing cones on our revolvers. Worked really well, but you had to buy replacement "wipes" or make your own out of very thin brass. I don't even know if you can get parts for it anymore. Then Hoppe's and Birchwood Casey came out with their Lead and Rust Remover cloths, and the Lewis fell by the wayside.
Just as a PSA, if you do find yourself scrubbing lead from your guns, wear a mask and gloves. Something we never did back in the day, and something that we probably should have. It's cheap insurance. These days I wear gloves whenever I clean my guns, not just for protection, but simply because I don't feel like smelling like gun cleaner for the next two days.
