    Default Looking for Iver Johnson manufacture date

    I picked up a neat little Iver Johnson revolver this week. I believe that it is a Third Model Safety Automatic, made between 1921-1929, from what I've been able to piece together from online. I'd like to pin it down better, if possible.

    It is the short barreled, hammerless, five shot, two latch model, with Pat. Nov. 17 on the bottom of the grip. Serial number is on the bottom of the trigger guard, but the serial number under the left grip scale is I29XXX. I haven't been able to find anything about an "I" prefix on the serial number.

    Any help would be appreciated. I know from the patent date on the grip that it references the Nov. 17, 1908 patent, it just isn't stamped well. But, this means that it isn't a black powder model, it handles smokeless powder.

    Thanks in advance.

    Best I can find is that the serial numbers in that date range you provided have a prefix letter.

    I didn't see anywhere state that a letter represented a specific year like how H&R's 1940 to Remington buy(2008'ish) letter codes represent.

    What is odd that you said yours has an "I", because when most manufacturers use letters "I" and "O" are usually skipped because of the visual conflict with "1" and "0".

    Bill Goforth(RIP) wrote a book on Iver Johnson. ...actually wrote THE BOOK on them. Copies are about $100-$150 these days.

    I hear what you're saying. I can't remember what forum I found the info that I had about 1921 to 1929 timeframe.

    Here is the serial #. That is distinctly an "I" and not a "1".

    I= September. 29= 1929 108= 108th unit.

    Most companies avoid I (as in Eye) and O (Oh) in serial data but some don't.
