Default Question on jframe trigger issue

Not sure if this is normal or not but this is on a 638-3 smith I bought new about 3-4 months ago. It fires fine and every time. The issue is if I cock the hammer into single action and press the trigger very very lightly the hammer releases but catches on something. It moves about an 1/8-1/16” and stops. I removed the side plate and found the hammer catching on the trigger sear not much but enough to cause this. If I continue pressing the trigger the gun fires but if I let off the trigger it acts like a decocker. I called smith and Wesson and they’re saying some weird stuff that makes no sense but also wanting me to send it in and at best 6week turn around time. So do we have an idea of what I can do to resolve this and do we have a gunsmith to recommend within and hour or 2 of Harrisburg?
I can try to load up a vidja to help show the issue

My guess...when you press the trigger very very lightly until the hammer falls, you are feeling the sear engaging the half-cock notch. Pressing the trigger in a normal manner, the trigger travels further as the hammer falls and the notch slips by with clearance.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

I have a 638 and I just tried what you did, mine doesn*t do that. I*d make sure it*s not something to do with that lock that*s on it. I had a smith with a lock and it gave me nothing but issues.

The full cock notch on the trigger or hammer is out of spec. Don*t use it in that condition, one or both parts need to be replaced. That condition often results from improper *trigger jobs*.

What’s happening is the hammer is falling and not passing the double action fly. It’s engaging the fly and acting, as you said, like a decocker.

Usually comes from stoning or filing the full cock notch on hammer and or trigger causing a change in release clearance with the fly.

This. Your gun should go back to S&W for repair.

There is a chance the parts can be recut and saved. Bring it by if you want an opinion. It can be difficult to source those parts as the factory doesn*t generally sell them. Us peons are not sophisticated enough to fit them*

So I removed the side plate and watched the trigger come in contact with the sear. The gun has the lock but it does not seem to be any part of this from what I can tell. It is all factory no work has been done I have fired approx 300 rounds of factory ammo through it all standard pressure. It only does it when I extremely gently press the trigger the hammer *catches* and I can press through or decocker via the trigger. If I press through it and kinda go slowish I can feel it catch but go through. The trigger hook is contacting the double action sear
