    Default AR break-in?

I just finished my first AR build! It’s a beaut! Its all DPMS with a 16-inch chrome-moly barrel. My question is...What is the proper procedure for break-in? I already cleaned it to ride it of any unwanted residues and such from manufacturing and shipping. So what’s next..? I already checked out ar15.com, it seems they have multiple procedures. So what is the easiest and most efficient method to break-in?

    Thanks
    Jim

Just go shoot. That's all that you need to do. The rest is just wishful thinking and extra work.

Insert magazine, point muzzle downrange, remove safety, pull trigger and repeat.

DPMS' manual says to fire a shot and clean the bore for the first 10 shots. Then clean it every 10 shots for the first 100 or so rounds.

I went out and ripped 60 rounds through it. Fully cleaned everything. Shot another 150 rounds through it. Fully cleaned it.

    Seems broken in to me.

Go to the store buy 500 rounds of 223, get in your car again drive to the range of your choice. (the closest one usually works best for me) Get out of your car load up 5 mags and let the fun begin. When the smile is ear to ear your rifle is broken in. Enjoy your new EBR!

    How to break-in an AK:

    1. load up as many magazines that you can find. ...need about 1500rnds+ worth
    2. have friends nearby to hand you magazines and help load gun
    3. snort some super meth to give yourself a mega twitch in your trigger finger
    4. rip through the ammo until the barrel glows and the forearm catches on fire.
    5. allow forearm to burn for 10min
    6. extinguish fire
    7. throw in mud and allow it to cool.
    8. pick gun up again and continue to shoot until the pretty orange glow comes back.
    9. dunk gun in bucket of water
    10. clean gun, ignore the sooty cosmo that you missed on the initial cleaning
    11. enjoy your properly broken-in AK.

    Oh wait, you're talking AR's...

    1. feed it ammo and clean it.
    2. clean it alot.

I like what knight0334 had to say. Especially about dunking it in a bucket of water. Point and shoot until you feel like its christmas morning and you are a 5 year old boy again. When you have that feeling then the gun is broken in.

Unless you're afraid DPMS might have sent you one of their tack-driving benchrest barrels, you're probably not going to be able to tell the difference between a barrel that was "properly broken-in" and one that was not.

Shoot it. Clean it. Shoot it some more. Clean it some more. When you can no longer maintain MOZ (minute of zombie) accuracy, it's time for a new barrel.
