CCW Permit Restrictions on CC Gun
Question: You receive a CCW Permit and qualify (target proficiency)with a certain handgun. Is the CCW Permit ONLY for that handgun or for any other handguns you may want to carry. Example: You probably cannot qualify on a target at a 20 or 30 yard distance with a derringer-type pistol so you use your Glock--can you carry the derringer as a CCW under the permit?

Re: CCW Permit Restrictions on CC Gun
Same for DE. Its a Carry Conceal Deadly Weapon. Not A Pistol Permit. No restrictions on what gun you carry.
I think NY is like that. And their pistol permit has to have the guns listed on the permit. I'm nor sure how SC works.
I also know that many of us get a FL or UT license for covering many of the other states. Neither of them have restrictions on what guns you carry.
Also many states don't do a proficiency test. PA doesn't require any. DE, FL and UT require a Safety course and knowledge of the laws but nothing like a 20-30 yard test. DE we just had to put 100 rounds down range. No requirement of even hitting the target. They just want to see if you can safely handle the gun and point it in the general direction.Last edited by stephpd; December 1st, 2008 at 11:44 AM.

Re: CCW Permit Restrictions on CC Gun
It shouldn't matter, but you'd be better off asking over on www.opencarry.org in the SC state thread there, the guys from your state would probably be more knowledgable about that then us

Re: CCW Permit Restrictions on CC Gun
As an aside, though, don't carry a derringer. Accuracy is poor, recoil is bad, and one round is never enough.
As a carry weapon, a derringer is pretty much a last resort when carrying is against the rules/law, concealment is an absolute priority, and one shot is better than nothing. Like in a prison camp, maybe. But in that case, you might as well carry a .22 zip gun. At least you won't confuse your zip gun with a real gun; hopefully that will make you cautious.

Re: CCW Permit Restrictions on CC Gun
In Texas if you qualify with a revolver then you are only supposed to carry a revolver, but if you qualify with a semi then you can carry either.
If you don't know who your state legislators are go here:
http://www.legis.state.pa.us/index.cfm
put your zip plus 4 in the box in the upper right hand corner.
