Thanks for the replies and I believe I will take a chance on one since they aren't too expensive.

I have this and extremely pleased with it, Eton seens to be the brand name industry standard with these I had two of the earlier Gens, one took a swim on a multi day Kayak trip and another the AAA batteries corroded severely. I store the new one without the batteries installed and it lives on a shelf in my workshop with the USB plugged in to maintain the built in (replaceable) battery I often camp at Bald Eagle and Allegheny National Forrest where the celllphone goes to roaming and reception is sketchy having to find a tall peak for a signal, this gives very reliable Weather reports, The AM band works well in mountainous terrain the FM not so much. The hand crank works as advertised and will charge a cell phone, although it takes a bit of cranking, Like the radio on Gilligans Island !

Found mine. It's an Eton fr160. Seems the outside got funky with age though...sticky. not sure if the case itself or what it was stored besides caused it. Wiped clean with rubbing alcohol though.

Edit...fired right up after years of sitting.

I think I bought the Eton based on reviews/Red Cross recommendations, but it's been at least a decade

    I had one. it died.
    Here's my thought though...
I have a generator, 6 5 gallon cans always full, 6 working vehicles (that all get topped up if a major storm is called for), several extra car batteries, and 2 inverters. if it's gotten to the point where all my gas is gone, all my batteries are dead and I can't fire up an inverter, then well...

I have a 30 year old one. AM/FM only. Has a small solar cell that will play it in direct sunlight. 60 cranks will last 45 minutes of radio. Less the louder you play it. It has a clear plastic case and you can see the wind up spring running a little generator.
I had this before cell phones were in existence. I'm old
