    Default Preferred PA deer caliber

What's your favorite / preferred Pennsylvania deer cartridge....we all have a go to ...what's yours ?

I used to love the deer camp cartridge arguments over the fire and several whiskeys ...

FWIW ... I know I missed some favorites but these are the ones I most encountered...

Also I'd love to hear the fire stories , I used to swear by my .35 Marlin 336 but realized my new 30-06 was much more versatile....and accurate

My deer rifle is 30-06. Does the job and readily available and not expensive.

I voted for .243, but wish I could have voted for .44 Magnum. I also a 7mm and a .30-30. I still use a slug gun from time to time.

    I've used a number of cartridges on deer in the 30 years I hunted them; 30-30, 30-06, 308, 6.5x55 Swedish, 35 Remington, 30-40 Krag, 45-70.

But my all-time favorite is the 38-55.

My Encore is equally accurate with either the 30-06 or 243 barrels when I am watching the fields, but I really enjoy using the 45-70 Katahdin barrel with a black powder load when I*m deep in the woods.
That all being said, Dads old Marlin 30-30 may go for a walk with me just to have him hunting with me one more time.

I voted for the 243 since I have used it forever for deer but my all-around pick would be the 338 win mag. A lot of people would say its too much for deer but its not much different than a 30.06 if you use the proper loads. When you drop them with the 338 they stay down. It's such a versatile caliber you can load bullet weights from 160 grains all the way up to 300 grains. Not much in this country you can't use this gun for.

Where I live it's 12 gauge rifled slug. Other than that though it used to be 30-30 or 30-06 but things have changed. I saw a guy up in the State Gamelands 52 in Berks Co. with a 375 H&H one time. Whatever floats your boat I guess. Never did see any water buffalo that day.
