I'm still betting he tried to use someone else's D/L and this was an easy way out for the dealer. I'm pretty sure he's prohibited.

I think rejecting a sale because the buyer doesn't have a 'Real ID' is pretty clever if the dealer's spidey senses start to tingle. I will never get a 'Real ID', but if a FFL doesn't want to sell or transfer a firearm to me because I don't have one that's their prerogative and I wouldn't hold it against them. Losing a sale is a lot less costly than losing their FFL and the legal ramifications of facilitating a straw purchase.
